Like Kstromberg said, my car would be a dog until i changed out the 23 tooth black speedo gear, just tried WOT and it is much slower than before when it was stock, i really hope the Speedo gear i ordered yesterday gets here soon and that the car feels atleast a DECENT amount faster, cause im honestly super unhappy

no, from a 30-38 mph roll my car downshifted hard when stock and pulled the hardest from that speed, i just tried it after gears and it didnt downshift it just felt super slow and i felt like i gained absolutley no performance at all, kstromberg said i needed to swap my speedo gears from 21 to 23 tooth, i have the gear ordered and it should be here friday lets hope it corrects the issue

The gear he is talking about I believe only has to do with the speedometer. I don't think it has anything to do with how fast your car.

He told me it has to do with my shift points, not the speedometer, a gen 2 goes off of the front abs sensors for the speedo

at 30 ish, the computer probably won't drop to first with 4.10s. it'll drop to 2nd.
if you want first gear, slow down more before you floor it.

my car will do it, but it can snap between gears faster than a stock car.
the 2nd gen i sometimes drive is real reluctant to downshift.

you'll have to learn to drive a little differently.
the real advantage of 4.10s is out of the hole.
0-40 is wicked.

On a gen 1 car the speedo gear determines the speedometer speed and shift points.

On a gen 2, the speedo gear is only used for shift points. The front ABS sensors determine speedometer speed. The car will drive like poo until you change the vss gear.

Don't fret.

Chris - what speed will my car "pull" the best from now then?

Deiseldan - i hope so, i was really dissapointed. i heard the speedo gear is really easy to change though. you guys think i can do better than a 14.5 with just 4.10s, track-lock, and poly bushings?

i hit the "im a dumbass who freaks out too much because i love my mark wayyy too much" button. haha i was like WTF but then i tried it from a slower roll like what chris told me to do and it made a BIGGGGGG difference

Glad that you like them man. With 4:10s I think the car pulls hardest everywhere. When I had a 3k stall and 4:10s in my first one, omfg I actually would rip evos and subies out of the hole. She hooked and booked especially with the sticky 275/40/17s I had.

isik32valve- thanks dude! yeah i really need a stall, im probably gonna look at buying a used one because i REALLY cant afford the 600$ plus for a good new one, and the f63 marauder converter isnt gonna give me anymore stall, just a better lockup piston. My goal is to rape some 350 and 370zs and some subaru wrx, and lt1 camaros

Revmax torque converters my buddy got his 3800 from them and it was like 450 or 480 something like that. But yeah would hold my own with 3 valve mustangs with that gear and stall. Stock 3 valve mustangs. Murdered 350z stock of course idk my car was a freak. My best 1/8 mile run was a 9.48 stock. 9.6s consistently.

The VSS affects the shift points on a gen 1. I drove around for a day or 2 with 3:73s and the wrong gear for a day or two. It shifted early.

You can get the speedo gears at summit/ford/etc. pretty easy to come by.

What gear did you put in? I am thinking 3:73s for mine.

I'm putting 4:10s + TL in my NON-Jmod 98, I'll have the tune done..

Will I be needing this gear too? If so, which one?

Its actually better to get a dallas sped cal. or a dakota digital. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/dak-sgi-5/overview/ like that one. this way it doesnt matter what size tires you use or change too. what gear you run in the back. a couple of dip switch toggles and your all set. I have also heard those speed-o gears will tear up after a while and can cause issues in the transmission.

No, on a gen 2
Tune will take care of any issues, it has on mine.
4.30s you would need to change the gear I do believe.
