I finally bled my transmission this week. The car had the original fluid. The plastic plug was still in the pan. When installing the filter, I had trouble making it stay put. I was sure the flange was flush with the underside of the outlet, but it would sag when I didn't put pressure on it with my hand. I installed the pan anyway. It's only gone around the block so far. Should I worry, or is this a normal installation problem?
 
Filter seal? My car is 98. The neck of the filter that went in to the valve body had a rubber gasket in the up tube. The kit I purchased had nothing save the filter and a gasket.

They usually come WITH filter seal. That's the one in the valve body. That should always be changed when changing filter. That's what "grabs" the filter. I hope you reused the stock pan gasket too.
 
Well, back to the drawing board. I looked at the old filter and I almost surely did NOT remove the old one, as the neck of the old filter shows no seal. So, the old one is probably in there preventing the new one from seating properly. You guys saved my bacon, as I would have probably had pressure problems about 200 miles into my 400 mile trip this weekend. I wanted to change the fluid after 10k miles, not 10, but there you go. I will only change whats in the pan this time. Thanks to all for your advice.

When you get back into it, how about taking some pix and posting them? I've not done this job but may sometime soon
 
Back from under my spotless hot rod. Sure as ****, the old seal was jammed up into the inlet. I removed it and the new filter went in tight and solid. Thanks again to all for your help. This could have been disastrous. I drove it about 10 miles with it having a loose filter. I would have taken pics, but I didn't see your reply until I was finished. This isn't a difficult job, just need to pay attention to gasket alignment, and torque on the little bolts on the pan. I've always been a believer in use of slight amounts of RTV to hold gasket in place and just enough on the outer edge to fix in place. And, don't be stupid enough to be in a hurry, or you'll do it over again, like me. Bonehead move. Turned out fine, though, thanks to LVC.
 
Now, if I could just get mine to look as bad as yours, I could cruise into the sunset a happy man.
