01 ls8 trans problem. need help asap

i have a 01 ls v8 with a p0731 code for first gear and a p1565 code for the cruise control. I am rebuilding the car so I have something to drive when my son is born. It needs a brake booster also but that's not a big deal I'll be getting one tomorrow. This is my first LS but not my first Lincoln. So far i love he car but need to have it reliable. Just looking to get a second opinion on the trans before i start ordering parts or should I get a trans form a bone yard and swap it in? The car has 142k on it. My plan is to order a shift kit and new springs and gaskets for it and fix it after hours at my work.

Hoo hard to respond with that avatar as I'm a huge fan of Chevy. Nevertheless, my guess would be a solenoid pack issue with the first gear solenoid being jammed or otherwise not responding as the PCM expects. It's a bit of a pain replacing the solenoid pack mainly due to the wiring harness plug has a bolt that holds it in, and that harness/bolt enters the solenoid through the top. Don't know if you've been under it or not yet but the trans tunnel is so tight it's almost form fitting.

Best bet though, would be to take it to the dealer for a diagnostic. They will tell you exactly what needs to be replaced for an hour's shop time, which will save you from guesses and part tossing. It could be a solenoid issue, an actual hard part failure or even a PCM failure, so a dealer check first would save a lot of time and money.

Lol yea that was when i was 17 and thought i was a tuff guy. I'm a Ford mechanic but only vans. I'm being IDS home tonight to do some diagnostics. It was just the weekend and wanted o see if anyone knew before i started borrowing expensive computers. Thanks for the response
