02 LS Camshaft sensor location

I have a 2002 LS with the V8. The camsaft sensor needs to be replace, but I'm not sure where it is. Can somone let me know where it is?

There are two camshaft sensors (one for bank 1 and the other for bank 2), if gen I is like gen II. [It's possible that gen I only has one since it does not have variable valve timing. I'll look it up tonight.] Which one do you need to replace, and why do you believe it needs to be replaced? (It's hard to believe it has been properly diagnosed and tested if you haven't even found it. OBDII codes do not absolutely indicate faulty components.)

There should be one on each cylinder bank, at the front of the engine, facing inward.

Gen I only has one. I found out that it's on the driver side closest to the fire wall. I pulled the codes and it gave them the code for the camshaft sensor, plus it idles ruff, takes a couple cranks to start and its running lean.

There is no "code for the camshaft sensor." What was the specific code?

P0340 was showing for the camshaft position sensor circuit and PO171 saying the system is to lean.

So, before you run out and replace the sensor, you should do the prescribed voltage and resistance tests on the wiring and inspect it and the connector. It could be the sensor, but it also could be the wiring, connectors (part of the wiring really) or (rarely) the PCM. Mechanical issues are possible too, but not as likely with that specific code.
