02 LS V8 trans questions

My dad has a 02 LS V8 with about 220k miles on it. He said the other day it was shifting hard and studering when going into gear then the next day it wont go into any gear and move under its own power at all. I'm thinking with that many miles its just time for a "new" transmission but what are the odds that just replacing the solenoid pack might fit it? I went to check the fluid and when I pulled the center check/fill plug out I got about 2qts of fluid drained out with the motor running and it still had a steady stream of fluid when I put the plug back in. I'm thinking the pump is not pumping fluid into the trans and leaving too much in the pan but could the solenoid pack be part of this prob? What I'm getting at is it worth spending the money on a new 'noid pack and it not fix the prob?

Next question is do I have the 5R55N 1W2P-AA or the 5R55N 2W2P-AA transmission? I can find the 1W for about $350 and the 2W for about $550 at the local salvage yards
 
anyone? can anyone tell me how to tell what transmission i have or are they interchangeable? Are the pans different? do they have different tags on them?
 
Have you checked the COP's (coil on plug)? You have a 5r55N trans. They are all interchangeable IIRC. Any trans from a 2000-2002 will bolt right in to the car. COP's failing can seem like trans problems. Search around a little and you will see what I'm talking about

As long as the donor car was a V8 too.
 
does the fact that my dds car has the "trip-tronic" slap shiftier in it. In order for the coils be have the same effect as what I have all 8 would have to be dead as the car will not move under its own power at all in ANY gear.

The transmission is the same, no matter if you have the normal shifter or the sport shifter.

Coils can be the issue, even if it is just one. When they go marginal, they generate a lot of RFI. This can confuse the PCM and cause unexpected problems, including transmission issues. Not your issue, but on gen II it is well known that a marginal #4 coil can cause ETC failsafe mode which can limit the engine to idle power only.
 
humm never heard of that but it makes since I guess... thanks looks like ill be replacing a trans this week sometime yay
 
At 220k miles, im sure the coils have been changed before. If they havent been changed twice in 220k then it is probably time.
 
my dad is the 3rd owner of the car and the 2nd owner bought it with 60k miles on it and he only changed 3-4 of the coils the rest are factory coils believe it or not

Like Joe said..... Bad coils (and plugs) can mimic transmission problems. I would replace ALL the coils and plugs prior to blaming the transmission.
 
You will need to change the coils soon anyway. Like Joe and LS4me said, do that first and you may not need a transmission.

lol at everyone who said coils... he said it wont even go into gear.
OP do you have an 'E' on the dash where it would normall show P,R,N,D5,etc?
is it spitting any codes at all?
 
He said the first day it was acting up and shifting hard it did have some sort of message about the transmission on the dash. Now the dash looks normal I can shift it through all the gears so to speak but the car wont even try to move in any gear.

I got under the car to check the fluid thinking maybe it was just out of fluid and with the car warm and idling in park I got about 2 qts of VERY black ATF when i pulled the center fill plug out and it was still coming out when i put the plug back in.

did you try to look for a code even though the light is no longer lit?
your issue with the car not going into gear at all is 99% likely to NOT be coils despite what everyone above has concluded.
my advice is to get the codes out of it and come back with those. someone here may be able to help you at that point. if you cant get the codes, i believe you are going to need to get it to lincoln/ford dealer for a ~$150 diagnosis and then go from there.

write down all of the codes once you get them, and then you can just try to disconnect the battery and follow the reconnect procedure. I highly doubt this is going to solve ALL of your problem but it will at least reboot your KAM and potentially clear fault-related data from rendering the tranny inoperable. assuming your codes are indicative of coil issues and a resultant failsafe, disconnecting the battery should clear everything related to failsafe and it will at least be able to move. at that point you may be able to isolate the issue to coils.

you can try throwing new coils in it, but theyre expensive and i would only try that if you can definitely return them free of charge as this is only possibly the main issue causing a completely inoperative tranny... im not 100% familiar with '02s or genI's but off the top of my head, i am fairly certain that you can get out of failsafe mode by just turning off the engine and turning it back on. you may be limited in power, but the car should at least engage and move.
