My 97 has been stumbling and hesitating for a couple weeks now. The check engine light comes on and I pull the codes and I get the same 3-4 each time then erase them and keep going as I havent had time to tend to the problem until now. The codes i got were cylinder 8 misfire, some sort of secondary air injection mafunction, evap emission control system leak (large). I assumed the misfire to be due to a faulty coil on the number 8 cylinder so I went out and bought a new coil. Just before I was about to put it on, I pulled the codes one more time and instead of getting the cylinder 8 misfire, this time I got a code for multiple/random misfires detected. This has thrown me for a loop and Im not sure what to do from here. Replace all of the coils? Replace just the 8th coil? Something else? The stutter/hesitation has gotten pretty rough, sometimes worse than others but at its worst its extremely bad.

Despite the current issues im having I took the car to the dragstrip last night and ran a 15.5 1/4 mile. This has me think 14.5 can be had with very little effort.

when was the last time you changed out all the COP's?? if it has been awhile, i recommend replacing them all just to be safe.

I just bought the car about 6 months ago and the COPs appear to be the originals, making them 10 years old. The car has 135K miles onit, would they typically go bad at this point? Is there any way to test them? As Im sure everyone here knows, these things are quite expensive.

if you suspect them of being orig w/ 135k. then i would just replace them all and i do not know how to test COP's, other than pulling the codes w/ a scanner.

14.5s in a 97 will take some effort.

the coil is the reason for both the cyl 8 misfire and the p0300/p0316

the evap leak might have been the gas cap left off. another common failure is the CVV on newer cars. not sure about the mark (out of warranty=hardly ever see them now)

not as much as you think, i got a 14.8 with traction issues with just a maf, shift kit, and cheap cheap exhaust work

There's a big difference between 14.5 and 14.8. Given the same traction issues you will need around 30 more horsepower.
