1997 Evergreen/Ivory Progress

Header install. These are a set of Kooks that came with the car that have been sitting unused for a while. Figured what the hell.

I don't feel like dealing with collector leaks, so the 3 bolt flanges came off to make room for new stainless V-band flanges. From there I'll be fitting mandrel bends back to the existing x-pipe. I have a feeling, that once I get to that point I'll order everything needed to take it clear out to the back.

I also bought the 309L stainless filler wire I need to weld 304ss collector to the 409ss flange.

Hopefully I'll have everything here this weekend to rock and roll this somebitch.

After it's running, I've got SCT Pro-Racer, and an X-Cal3 to play with.

Update...

Mandrel fittings came in finally. I immediately got to work fitting everything together. I had a buddy call saying he was bored so he came over to help fit it up.
Passenger side downpipe and flex in place.

And "done" ish

I'm leaving town for a few days to lay out some 12" sched 40 steel pipe out of town so this will sit till I get back to burn it out completely.

This is all Mild steel except for the flanges and flexes. (Those will be welded with 309L .030 Wire with 75/25 cO2/Argon mix). Everything else is standard 70Kpsi .030 wire with the same gas.

Wow, that's really awesome, Mike. You need to get it down to the track to see what you run. I would bet deep into the 13's now.

thinking of coming out of the x pipe with 3" single oval to the rear end then split it . wondering what the sound will be like. it will be smoother flow more later.JD

Got a couple hours of free time today, and got the down pipes burned out.

This is a preliminary rendering of what I am planning for the rear portion of the system. We'll see how the oval tubing fills out the tunnel area. (crossection is damned well similar between the two.)

Does that oval tubing have to be made by hand or is there someone who makes mandrel sections of the flattened tubing? What's the diameter of that stuff anyway?

Many places offer mandrel oval tubing. A quick google search will find Mild steel, 304 Stainless, and 409 Ferritic Stainless.

Dual 2.5" pipes = 7.59sqin

Oval 3" tube = 6.54sqin

Compared to the stock stuff......still light years ahead.

wow just now reading through this thread and all i can say is WOW. such a beautiful car and such a clean build. what clutch setup are you going to run with?

Found these on a 99 Conti in the salvage yard today. 39.99 Each and they are sitting in the shop. We just ordered both intake and exhaust tools to pull the valve springs and ultimately the valves themselves.

I'm sending them in to be hot-tanked and new valve guides installed and I'll bring em' back here to re assemble them. (more on that later.)

All of the final bends (oval and otherwise) are ordered and will be here later this week. I'll start fabricating the rear section of the exhaust on Saturday.

It's getting there.

Awesome find on the heads Mike, been kicking around going the route since the head gaskets went on the 97.
Cam timing is going to be fun!

Got the heads torn down and cleaned up. After checking valve seats, and faces I decided to re-use what I had and lap all the valves back into place. Guides looked good and measured out correctly along with the valve stems. I'll be installing new stem seals after I finish polishing and port matching the intake and exhaust ports. nothing drastic.

This engine combo will be in the ranking for a budget build.

Stock crank
forged rods
forged pistons
Ford head and crank bolts
all assembled here in the shop.

Pulled apart and ready to clean

One head Lapped in and ready for the die grinder.

Exaust tubing came in tonight as well. I can't wait to hear this combo once it's all done.

Did you happen to mention where you were getting the bent oval pipe?
