2 1/2 inch exhaust- will I lose power?

I have a 98 LSC, so true duals. If I went with an x pipe, deleted 3rd cat and 2 1/2 inch piping from the cats back into flowmasters, would I lose power from having bigger piping on a stock motor?
 
The loss of backpressure effects scavenging and thus torque. It will be minimal at worst. Nothing to lose sleep over. The gain on the high end will be noticeable however.

If you really want to make the car go for the same coin, leave the exhaust alone and toss in some gears and a chip/tuner.

4.10's will make you smile a heck of alot more than a fancy x-pipe and crappier (the stock pipes are nice heavy stainless) pipes you get from the muffler shop.
 
my 96 has no mufflers, just pipes past the resonator-i don't care about the noise, but am going to do an x-pipe in the near future and would appreciate suggestions on mufflers and tips-i plan on going with 2 1/2" pipes from the cats back, and will remove the resonator. thanks
 
Great example, 14point6@97 here on the board (sorry Ken if thats wrong) went BONE stock 14.60 @97 mph then weeks later with just our cat back went a 14.33. Big gains.
 
Well after all your responses I feel more confident going with a 2 1/2 system. This wont be happening until the summer but I already ordered an x pipe. Flowmaster original 40s are next, then I just have to worry about taking it to a shop near me and getting the system done.
 
...And just so you know, 2.5" duals WILL FIT, regardless what the shop might tell you.

agreed. crappy muffler.

ill be building a mandrel stainless 2.5 dual for mine pretty soon. ill have back to back times for it as our track is open nearly every weekend and about 10 minutes from my home. ill also be offering it up for sale as a package ;)
 
The best way to avoid loss of low end torque is not to have any 'low end'.

4.30 gears and a 3800 stall converter works well for that. :p
 
Blowmasters aren't really "crappy" mufflers, just plain old too loud on our cars specifically because of the fact thet the mufflers are at the end of the equation meaning pipe before only, with no piping after, on Mustangs..etc there is pipe before muffler as well as after so it is not half as loud as on our set up.
 
has anyone ever head SLP Loudmouths on a Mark VIII? I always wondered how these would sound on our Mark VIIIs. I would imagine it would be pretty loud with a 2.5" catback with no third cat and an x pipe. I know our cars are different exhaust wise from a cobra, but my friends 99 cobra has a UPR offroad X with SLP Loudmouth II mufflers, loudest/sickest exhaust I've heard on any mustang

Again Cobra=pipe before and after mufflers, our cars ALL pipe before so they would be horrendeous loud.

Today I did my exhaust with 2 1/2 piping all the way back to to some dynomax bullet mufflers. I can feel the kick when I give her some gas, but she roars really loud. At idle, it is a deep low rumble. What can I do to quiet her down a bit?

On my white one I put a 2in/2out right after the 3rd cat with magnaflow bullets on the rear. That was on the stock exhaust piping. I think on a 2-1/2 it would be perfect. On mine it was a little too sedate and muffled on the stock pipes.

On my black car with kooks headers into a double x and then into dynomax mufflers, (no cats), can you say hear me roar? LOL
