sounds like you've got a problem. I don't own a LS so I have no idea. Sounds bad though.

Sounds like one or more bad coils to me. Common.

i am hoping it is the coils i did have oil in 3 hole.i check the coil swith a spark plug to see if there was spark and there was. i hate to go to the dealer.i had bad coil before and the code would read misfire cylinder 5 al

How many miles on it? Did you notice any strange sounds when trying to start it?

I know this is an old post, but I just joined the forum and I have strange sounds when starting our freshly purchased 2003 LS V8. It seems to only happen when it cold starts, but it's a popcorn sound. Once the engine is warm we can turn off and restart the car for the next few hours without hearing it again. Someone said it was because the person who gassed it up last put regular gas in...we just decided to use premium only and added it yesterday. Waiting to hear from the fiancée about the start this morning. While I wait, any ideas?

Well, replacing all coils and plugs is usually a good idea. The original poster almost certainly had a jumped/stretched timing chain due to failed tensioners. This should not be an issue for your 03. Instead, you might want to remove the valve covers and see if any of the cams are moving front to back.
