2000 LS engine stumbles and dies

My 2000 Lincoln LS was running fine. Started it up and the engine was running rough, car surged a bit and pulled into the driveway where it died. It cant maintain idle. It turns over and will start to run but its obviously not running on all cylinders. Car has about 73000 miles on it. From looking on here I know the coils go out often and seems like the obvious first step. Are there any specific coils to use or stay away from if not buying OEM ford units? Im not really interested in doing the accell modification. Any other things to look into besides coils?

V8, V6? Do all coils, all plugs at the same time with either Visteon (hard to impossible to find) or motorcraft. Plugs should be NGK or Motorcraft, 1.0 gap for v8, not sure about v6 but I believe its 1.2???. Check wells for oil, if oil is present change the Valve Cover Gaskets as well. DO NOT use cheap coils or plugs there are several reasons why and without getting into too much detail as this has been covered 1,000,000 times - you can search, the cheap coils/plugs will fail again, quickly - and prolonged driving on failing or marginal coils will destroy your cats which are around $1,200 each.

Thanks, I forgot to mention I have the V8. Any idea on what to expect for motorcraft brand of coils? I have seen the non name brand stuff for 50-75 bucks for all 8. I guess I should replace plugs as well while in there.

Last I checked coils were ~$54 each. The total job if you do it yourself will run about $450. This doesn't include VGCs (valve cover gaskets). The VGCs you can go with OEM or Felpro. The gaskets (for both) run about ~$60 - $110 depending on brand. You can get the torque specs and How-to's on here (search).

I am starting to question if this is a coil issue now. I went and tried to start the car today and the car fired right up and seemed to run near normal for about 5 seconds and then died. Trying to start again after that and it wont start at all. The car turns over but no starting at all now. Could a few bad coils be doing this? My neighbor has a code reader but its at work so he will bring it home monday. I am wondering what else this could be.

Try unplugging the connector to the MAF and see if it will start and run then.
If so, either you have a leak in the intake or manifold, a bad MAF, or a dirty MAF.

Also, you can try starting it with the gas pedal held 1/4 the way down. If it will start and run that way, it may be your IAC.

Note that if you smell gasoline, the engine may be flooded now. To clear a flood, press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there while trying to start the engine.
