2002 Lincoln ls v6 engine swap to a 2003 ls

hi guys, i currently own a 2002 ls v6 and engine was knocking bad coming from the oil pan, i took it to 2 diferent mechanics, told me it was crankshaft and said engine is no good...so i bought an engine but an 03 with vvt, i dont care to have the vvt i just want my ride to run smooth with no knock...the people whom i bought it from said the engine would fit fine so i went ahead and yes they were right..the engine dropped in fine all sensors and connectors fit fine, so at the moment of starting the engine it only turns over but doesnt actually start...


i know its my cam sensor thats causing this problem, like i said i dont need vvt...the cam sensor fits into the connector fine but in this newer engine the location of it is slightly different than the 02....would there be a possibility of bypassing this sensor or tapping into the crank sensor, maybe modifying the valve cover by drilling a hole so the sensor could read the bigger slotted wheel or should i have the mechanic just take the crankshaft out of the newer engine and installing into original...idk what to do, i cant return the damn engine now...stuck with it...
 
1) Was the PCM also replaced during the swap? Check the PATS light during crank. Afaik, 2002 is considered gen1 and 2003 is considered gen2. PCM and gauge clusters arent backwards compatible as far as gen's are concerned, which may be causing your crank but no start condition. But then again, should the engine be cranking at all if this was the case?

2) Check the fuel pump?
 
I don't think there's as much experience around here with the V6's between generations. I certainly don't know all the differences.

I would assume that the most likely way to succeed would be swap the top end of your old engine onto the bottom end of the replacement engine. Make sure all the holes match on the heads to the block. And I'm assuming head gaskets are available.
 
No the pcm remains the same....gauge cluster lights come on, engine liight stays on and getting a p0340 cam sensor code...if i try a few times turning key i get the engine on for like 5 secs then shuts off....
 
I don't think it's PATS. It would lock out the starter too.
Anyway, he has a code for a problem that would keep the engine from running. The cam sensor issue needs to be resolved.
 
Does the '03 cam sensor need some input from the VVT?

The '03 uses a completely different computer language. As far as I know, engine swaps between generations aren't viable.

As you didn't do any real homework before purchasing the engine (many engines will FIT) and are stuck with it, I would use as many internals as you can from the old engine and transfer them to the new. The electronics won't be interchangeable.

As always, I could be in left field here......
 
No the 03 cam sensor doesnt need any input from the vvt, totally separate...the cam sensor location on the 03 is maybe like 3 inches of difference than on the 02, the cam sensors are different too.....im concerned about the mechanical part of the vvt slotted wheel and cam slotted wheel bevause theyre like stacked and the vvt wheel is smaller, so thats why i was saying drill a hole on the valve cover to where the sensor would be identifying only the cam wheel and plug up the other hole...

If the sensors are different then it won't work. Like I said, the '02 uses a different protocol than the '03+.
 
Problem solved, thanks guys and thank you ls4me...us indeed a different protocol...slapped on the old cam sensor from 02 engine and damn engine started right away, running smooth as hell....no vvt but original 220hp v6 engine....swap a success

I'm glad you got it to work! This is good information for anyone else in your predicament!
 
It was a pain in the rear but vehicle running smooth, went to go pumo some 91 octane and for a slin...feels great!!!! Finally....thank you everyone for your input.....
