I'm looking at an 03 lsv8 at the local ford dealers. Drove by today and they had it up on ramps to show it off. Anyway looking at the underside of the engine bay (driver side) I noticed a strip of metal tubing wrapped in some type of silver insulating material which looked like it was held on with plastic ties. My guess is it was on there to shield the tubing from heat generated by the engine, but it looked sloppy almost like it was a patch for some problem the service techs couldn't solve.

Anyway heres my question - does anyone know if this insulator is factory applied or am I looking at some type of repair that was done to this car?

my 03 has that. I can't remember what it's for right now but I think it's norma. It looks sort of like aluminum foil, right?

thks - I'm thinking it might be the trans oil cooler line. the 03's do have one right? I just don't see why they covered just that small part of the line.

probably because it's the part that would be exposed to water splashing, etc. just a guess but take comfort in that it's supposed to be there

Right- the other thing I'm concerned about on this car are the OASIS history shows warranty work for an EVAP system leak and a bad ABS sensor and also apparently a few squeak and rattle complaints by the original owner (not sure what to make out of that). Any similar problems with your 03 ?

yes a few squeaks and rattles, glove box door mainly. other issues is all the door strikers seem to need to be realigned from time to time. never had abs sensor issues nor evap system leak but all that seems quite minor. I would DEFINITELY make replacing the tranny valve body and solenoid pack a part of ANY deal. Either now for free or $1000+ later.

Actually, I wouldn't worry all that much about what you found in the Oasis report. First of all, that lists things that were fixed; secondly, it sounds like the car was relatively trouble-free. '03 was a major overhaul year (tragically, the only major overhaul year), and a lot of things on the car were changed (for example, they added variable valve timing to the engines, heated and cooled--not ventilated, cooled--seats, and a new exhaust system, among others). If you're worried, have an independent mechanic take a look.

Well as far as the tranny its under warranty till july 2007 and I would probably get an ESP sometime before it expires. Dealer was asking 23k went down to 22k won't budge from there. I can buy an 02 for 18k I'm surprised at the price difference between the 02 and 03. I guess the market prices in all those upgrades- not sure if its worth 22k though. Opinions ?

The ABS sensor was replaced on my 04 with only 3500 miles. It was an issue that is easily fixed. IMHO the 03 is worth the difference in price. If only for the additional HP not to mention the extra goodies.
