2004 Lincoln LS V8 overheating/mysterious leak

THAT might explain all the short trip driving.

Have you taken it for any long drives while having this issue? Does it eventually straighten out... or get worse???

farthest i've driven it in one trip is about 30-40 miles, and i can say once it warms up shifting into 4th does not get better, it feels better when its cold. if anything it acts more confused and hesitant after a while of driving.

oh no it engages 5th gear fine, its just 4th that it hardshifts into and 3rd gear is just odd with its almost double shifting it feels lol. manually shifting or going from D4 to D5 doesn't seem to make much of any difference either. at first i couldn't shift into 4th manually but then i could and last i drove it, it wouldn't let me again.

3rd to 4th actually is a double shift, if I recall correctly. (overdrive off + shift up)

yeah i've gotten all sorts of ideas and wonders, really thinking it needs to be rebuilt/replaced. if only the 5R55S for the AJ V8 was so expensive to rebuild/replace (or any 5R55 trans)

i was almost wondering if it would be possible to put the ZF 6-speed auto Jag used in place of it, but controlling it would be tricky, as well as the shifter.

Well, with enough time and money almost anything is possible, but it would be way cheaper to buy an S-Type with the ZF 6. As stated, the problem is making all the electronics talk to each other and be happy about it.

yeah it would be easier to just buy the car that had it lol, buy me an S-Type R while im at it lol but yeah i may just fix the cooling system and sell it and find a better example later on down the road when i have more money.

that's what i was worried about, i had originally bought the car as a drift car or project car or even to flip but i kinda fell in love with it, but i do miss having a manual and this is turning out to have all the common/expensive issues lol finding out why the car ended up at auction now, can't say im surprised.
Yes I just purchased a 2002 LSE V8 Black on Black with 124,000 beautiful LSE and was chasing the Wheels sbf only the wheels off of a craigslist ad... when I happen to ask if the guy still had the LS that the wheels were on and to my surprise he said yes and I was pleased to find out it was a LSE Black on Black ....now to my point I bought the car and wheels for $400 dallars knowing that the car's reverse was out upon purchasing it ...I was hoping it was a $150 dollar solenoid pack fix ....so I replaced the Solenoid pack...but to no avail ...brought it to professional transmission shop ...Independent by the way ...never go to a Chain store with any car ...and $3000 dollars later the LSE's transmission was fixed :( If I didnt love this car I would've told the Transmission Mechanic to forget about it and I would've junked it ...but at 124,000 and the car's interior basically mint ...I have a nice LSE now ...also let's not forget there were only 1500 LSEs produced so there was another incentive...so in conclusion what you might think of as a easy cheap fix could cost you thousands ...beware and I wish you the best

yes i am very aware and will definitely be careful who i take it to if i don't work on it myself, especially for a trans shop. mine is just a V8 Sport, not an LSE unfortunately, but it is black on black which i love and it has the nice chrome 8 (or i guess 16) spoke wheels, someone also replaced the rear mufflers with resonators or something and it sounds good, but with the issues the car has i think i may just have to pass it on and get me a Manual V6 or a better example V8 Sport/LSE.

i wasn't even specifically looking for one of these but have always wanted one, but right now i also want a Manual Mustang GT (i had an 02 GT as my first car that i only had for a couple months, was forced to sell) so we'll see what happens. i bought the car at auction for only $500 (winning bid was $250) so its definitely worth fixing especially with only 78k miles, but i just don't have the money or time right now.

Like Joe said the more you drive it the more you will likely burn up the bands... but if you decide to fix it up ...due to being a black on black ...best looking LSes in my opinion ...just plan sexy... :) you could fix it up slowly...that's the only way to fix up a car anyway in my opinion...taking your time with it and fixing one thing at a time until one day you're like damn U have a damn nice car

yes i agree whole heartedly, that's why i too loved this car so much. ill look into cost of repairs but im not sure the likelihood just due to my situation unfortunately.... i really love the car, id hate to see it go to waste. i haven't been driving it, i drove it for about 2 weeks and then decided to go back to my other car so i wouldn't hurt it.

There were issues with the Gen 1 separator plate in the transmission. That is a reasonably easy fix for an experienced person.

Also... since the Mustang used a version of the 5r55s... some of the Mustang trans upgrades may work in the LS.

yeah that's true, i too wondered about beef parts meant for a Mustang 5R55S, but yeah a used trans is my best bet at this point and i still very well may do that if i come across a reasonably priced one. i've found a few that were said to be working for around $350-$500, while others are $700+ so i guess it just depends what i find when i get the money (and IF i get the money lol)

You could also have an issue with the sprag clutch, (important internal part).

You might want to start with draining out a little fluid to check the color. If dark... the first thing you might try is a fluid and filter change. If it looks like used engine oil... the trans is probably fubar.

Seafoam makes a product called "Trans Tune" that some people have had good luck with restoring proper function on 5r55 type transmissions.

If someone before you did a fluid change and didn't fill it properly... it could be low on fluid.

Low enough fluid level can cause low pressure... and that 3rd gear shift requires several parts to move... and that requires proper pressure.

Just a few ideas... ^^^

And again... the separator plate was an issue on the Gen 1. Solenoid pack gets quirky too with age... and as Joe mentioned the valve body might need rebuilt. There are sleeve kits for it.

well things have changed, due to recent events ill have to keep the car it seems for at least 6 months so i very well may be saving it, or trying to. ill look into putting a (hopefully) good used trans into it or looking into my current one to diagnose it, and continuing with replacing the cooling system plastics. i will be selling my other car which should help get me set for my next car as well as funding this one if need be and just helping me be less poor than i always am haha

next paycheck ill start buying and replacing cooling system parts as well as getting my other car ready to sell. i really do like the LS, i have to admit i missed driving it already, but i was hoping to just let someone else figure out and pay for its other issues... gives me time to save and raise the value of the car and possibly change my mind and keep the car who knows.
