2004 LS Transmission issue

2004 LS V6 , the car often has delayed/harsh (violent) shift into reverse but not always,going forward initial engagement occasionally is hard but not violently like reverse and shifts occasionally late, but when stopped it seems to disengage often and there is also a delay until it reengages shifting to N or d4 and back makes no difference I have to wait until the trans decides to reengage.
Now I have read all over about the solenoid block and valve body issues, but before I put any work into it I would like to know if these symptoms are indicative of a bad solenoid block and/or valve body or is there something else to look at I have no tranny error codes.

It's in the stickies. It's the solenoid assembly.
 
Thanks for your reply, I didn't see anything in the stickies, and I did a search but no one seems to mention the tranny disengaging when stopped so I wanted to know if that is also a solenoid issue. Also with these issues is it only the solenoid block or possibly a valve body issue as well.

Replacement of just the solenoid block fixes it in most cases. Of course, your case could be different. If it's been going on for long enough, the rest of the transmission might be damaged.
 
Thanks to all the help on the forums I changed the solenoid pack which was pretty straightforward beside for the solenoid connector which takes forever using a 10mm stubby which seemed to be the only way.
Also there was a discussion regarding the fill plug location, I have a 2004 and definitely the 5r55s but have the fill plug on the tail and not on the side.
But now the car has about a 30 second delay in drive and it seems to have lost 3rd and I'm getting p0745 which I didn't get before so I guess I'm going to be changing it again,but I would like to know how I can test the solenoid pack.
 
I would also like to know your thoughts on reusing the trans fluid I just put in when I do the solenoid again.

Sounds like possibly low fluid.

I wouldn't. What contaminants were in the receptacle when you drained the fluid? Is it worth the chance?
 
Hi I believe I filled it correctly it swallowed about 6.5 qts but I'll check again.
The only reason I'm asking is because the fluid I removed originally was brownish but showed as red on the rags and was pretty clean.
 
Ok thank you for your help I just got around to replacing the solenoid for the second time, and everything seems to be good. The only issue I have is that on a incline the engagement to reverse is slightly harsh.

Do you use your parking brake?
 
For anyone changing their solenoid out use a 10mm stubby flex to remove the electrical connector it's pretty easy with that.
 
Twice?

So you replaced your solenoid pack for a second time and it fixed the harsh and delayed engagement issues? Both new replacement solenoid packs? 1st replacement was just bad? Did you determine how to test them other than installing?
 
I got a supposedly reman solenoid block from ebay, I did not know how to test it, but it was worse than before, and they replaced the defective one right away, now the car shifts great the only issue I have is the slight firm shift when shifting on an incline.

Fluid level is OK, aside from something else being wrong with the tranny I think it's possible the "remanufactured" solenoid is just used.
 
That may be trapped air in the solenoid.

This is one thing that you should not skimp on. Max sells new Ford ones for as much as "reman" ones. The Ford ones are shipped in plastic and are filled with oil. If you lose prime then you'll have issues.
