95 MK misfire

When I did mine I pulled off the throttle body and set it on too of the intake manifold (since you have to keep the TPS plugged in of course). Put your key to TUN so that all your engine electronics are on. Get a multimeter and connect to the middle lead and one of the outside ones. Trial and error, I don't remember which is which. You'll know when you get it right because your meter will read a steady voltage. See what you get. If it's off, loosen the two bolts and see if it wiggles enough to correct itself. If not, you'll have to slightly drill out the holes. Now I'm not saying this will cure the problem or not cause more. I'm just saying that when I had this similar issue, this is what fixed it. Don't forget to either replace your throttle body gasket, or be very careful with it. Mine ripped the first time I removed it. I would have on beforehand just in case. They're really cheap.

Plug wires. And Autolite 764's. Motorcraft plug wires. I would start there. Do not use cheap plug wires. The last owner put cheap ones on mine and even though they were brand new I ripped the boot apart on five or six of them taking them out and then had to pick the rubber apart and blow the pieces out of the plug wells. Not fun.

I have 203k on factory coils and wires. Plugs were replaced for the 1st time 25k ago.

Wow, Original wires after 203K. My 95 continental needed wires at 110K.

I gonna agree with everyone else, change out the wires and plugs.

I agree too, wires old enough to vote can cause intermittent misfires, especially under load.:D

I've never had a problem with my 94 Gen 1 coil packs, 2 of them, over 200 k miles. I've had to replace my newer Gen 2 COPs though.

So I talked to my mechanic today and asked him to get me a good price on Motorcraft wires & plugs. He calls me back and says they aren't available anymore. So I went on the good ole internet, and ended up getting the Motorcraft wires from Rock Bottom Auto, through Amazon, and got the 764 copper Autolites from Rock Auto. all together, $79.00 shipped. Not to bad.

Ok, you all know about my issue here with the misfire, and thank you for your input! Now you have to here this! This is WAR WIERD!
You saw that this misfire happened the first time in late June, on a Friday night, and only lasted about 3 or 4 miles. then, last Thursday, 7-25-13, on my way to work, I started to climb the first mountain range on the way to work, and the misfire started. Lasted about 35-40 miles, and I was coming down the backside of the second mountain range, and after I got all the s y down to the bottom, the misfire went away, and has run fine ever since!
Forward to today. Started on my way to work. started the car, put a few bucks of fuel in the car, stopped by my mechanics place across the street for the gas station, to check on the status of my wifes Caddy, left, the car is running fine, but not all the way warmed up yet.got onto the freeway, and it's misfiring. stayed like that for over 60 miles. I'm coming down that same second mountain range has last Thursday, get to the same spot has last Thursday where the misfire cleared up, and it cleared up again!
Now tell me if that's not just WEIRD! so, do you think it's a spark plug, a sp wire, TPS has all these things were mentioned by all of you, or something else?
I already ordered the plugs & wires, i'll probably get a fuel filter while i'm at it. what do you think now? This is gonna be fun to hear!

No that's not weird you are going up a hill and putting a load on engine that's when it will misfire. You ever search "converter shudder" ? That can give the same feeling too.

i had to replace some fuel injectors in my car.
they caused a miss, and all around made the car run bad.

pulled the set out of the 69 Cougar, (they are a newer style, better fuel atomization,) and it ran much better.

You put in newer "pencil" injectors? Did you have to change the cars connectors to the injs?

nope. they looked the same. different tip though.

I assume you know you should avoid driving with a bad misfire at all costs? Ten miles is about as far as I would ever want to go. If the CEL flashes it means "stop ASAP".

No code sent. I had no choise but to drive it. And I climbed the same hills last,& this Tuesday, and it ran fine. Something is funny here. Im not getting an engine warning lite turning on.

first gens rarely, if ever, set misfire codes.
they aren't as good as 2nd gens in that regard.

hey o.p...update?
did you change plugs? still fighting that uphill ride?

My CEL to flashed 2 different times before changing my plugs recently...from misfiring...it was not a good day

the 96s, being OBD II might be an exception, as they are a lot like a 2nd gen computer wise.

I see. I hear people saying gen1s don't set misfire codes easily but that hasn't been my experience. But I have two 96s. Now I know why.

I changed the plugs/wires on this past Sunday night when it cooled of. thought it would take about 1 1/2. surprize! it took 3 1/2 hours to change! wow, never knew it was that different on a gen 1, compared to a gen 2! buit, the good news is that the car seems to be doing betternow. so far, no misfire. time will tell.
Now i'm waiting for my front 2 air struts, to get my car back up, after it vented all corners, and the nre rebuilt pump couldn't get the car pumped back up. also waiting for the pump to get back late next week, after a second check. i really hope i had a front bag that was bad, keeping it from getting repumped back up. i'll know late next week!
