had my engine rebuilt and somewhere along the line the trans dip stick disappeared does any one know the length of the dip stick so I can try to get a replacement

Looks like 21 inches from tip to where it stops at the top of the dip stick tube.
This is what the other end looks like (if you are trying to find another source...) (so 19.25->20 inches is full hot, 20 inches->20.75 is full cold)
For reference as they are different, this is a 97 Cougar (with a 4.6):
I THINK this one is 21 inches as well (the dipstick tube is like the Mark VIII, on the passenger side behind the head):

Get a used one for a mark viii. I had a Ford PU that the oil dipstick tube was made 1/4" to long, and it took 6 1/2 qts to fill it. For years I put too much oil in it. 1/4" on the stick, made me add 1 qt too much. JY should have one or Bruce does. dbleb88 here on LVC

I think I actually have a Cougar one in my car, it looks a lot like the picture, and it did fit. I called Super Coupe Performance when I struck out in the junkyards and on MarkVIII.ORG. He sent me that one and it was the same length as my Mark 8 stick but was nice and made of metal with no stupid plastic handle that breaks, but he also sent me the matching tube. I had to replace the tube because the moron who rebuilt the first transmission ripped the metal bracket off the tube and crunched the bottom so it was leaking trans fluid everywhere. But luckily it was easy to replace when the trans blew up after 1000 miles..
