98 LSC, aiming for 400 Crank HP

Hey all, OSS here;

I've an 98 LSC, artic frost w/ 140KM's on it. Looking for 400 crank this spring. Car is parked for winter...

I have 2.5" Mandrel bent pipes out to twin Flowmaster 44's.

To be installed so far, I have a 2.5" X pipe (no resonator) and also an SCP chip (91oct)
I would like to look into headers and also cams.

For cams, can I just shop for Cobra cams? How much lift can stock springs handle? Where can I find stock cobra intake cams? What would anyone recommend for 400HP?

have you considered boost? 8 to 10 psi will get you 380-400 wheel on a healthy stock block. that's what i would do.
 
Spray it with a 200 shot till she blows then drop a Coyote motor into it. Just remember, there isn't much you can do to this car to make it faster for cheap. Cams alone will cost you around $1200.
 
Better have deep pockets.
Find one of these.

Not easy to find 400 at the crank.
 
your gonna have to supercharge or spray it, your not gonna hit 400 without spending alot of dough, by the time you add up all the cost of mids like headers,converter,gears,chip,cobra intake,cobra rails,cobra cams etc you could have purchased a used vortech

I haven't the slightest clue on what to even look for for a S/C swap. 1200 is fine for cams, I don't really care for cost.
 
You can get 400+ HP at the crank N/A.

It's going to need bored, stroked, high compression, forged rotating assembly, headwork and some healthy cams. Not to mention all the supporting mods and tuning.

a simple vortech S trim for sn95 mustangs would work fine but your gonna have to make custom mounting brackets which isnt hard. You'll need injectors a fuel pump and tuning, sounds better to me then building a forged block

You can just get a kit for a 96-99 Cobra headunit will bolt right up. Have to make intake tubing thou. You can see here in one of my build threads.

Boost on a stock bottom is living on borrowed time, that would be all mk8s ;)

Not really true. keep it street friendly of 8-10 psi and no problems. Built my buddies stock 3V and made 510 RWHP and never had a problem.

Some have done it, many have not. I would guess the tune would be the key.

For me to rest easy the bottom would have to be done, most of these
b headed mark engines have miles on them exasperating the problem.

On a newish motor, No problem. 8-10lbs all day long.
The problem is 8-10lbs is kinda like crack, you just end up wanting more. Spin it a little higher, change the pulley, add a little spray... Doesn't last long after that.
If you have a motor/trans with around 100k or so on it and start to pile on the power; I wouldn't expect it to last too long.
If you are going to open up the motor in any way, buy parts and pay for service in the terms of headers, cams, and super charger do yourself a favor and buy a low mileage 03/04 cobra motor. Just the 3 parts listed and you are halfway to a complete motor/SC combo with a forged bottom end. This is without paying for any labor.
You can run the 03/04 cobra manifolds with modifications, if you're dead set on having kooks I'll sell you mine.

OP's engine has almost 90k on it.
Not newish I think.
A good goal would maybe be what...340hp at the crank with bolt ons?
I guess it comes down to what he wants out of the car.

If you had some fab skills and didn't mind a raised hood you can get a SC 5.4 GT500 motor and 6 speed trans complete with 26k on it for about $9k
 
Theoretically, could you run a stock valve train on a short block with a forged rotating assembly?

From all I hear cams don't give you much and aren't a week spot (excepts for the valve springs), so could I in theory just port stock heads (and intake) and just use forged crank/rods/pistons?

Yes you could. The bottom end is where most of the cost is. You could also throw a 200hp shot of spray at the stock block until she blows.
 
Thanks for all the replies guys. Supercharging and fabing seems a bit overwhelming. I've found a deal on 96 Cobra cams (he won't sell just intake). I've searched to no avail, but what is the typical install procedure for these cams, would it be worth it for me to have them installed? Maybe a set of cobra exhaust manifolds aswell?
