Folks:

My 98 Mark started pulling to the right while braking. The L/M dealer shop replaced frozen caliper and brake hoses ($700+).

It still pulls to the right while braking.

Now they are telling me it's a hydraulic ABS pump and could cost me well over $1,500 to have it rebuilt!!! (There are none made new anymore)

Anyone have any input about what options I have? I love my Mark, but....I love my $$$ too.

Thanks!

1. Have your alignment checked
2. Are your tires worn unevenly
3. Are you front bearings in good shape (hubs) ?
4. Are the rotors in good shape

I find it really hard to believe that the ABS pump is out. Looks like they're milking you for every penny.

Paul.

absoluetly 100 % is NOT your abs pump,

that could never cause this symptom.

check items from the posts above, dont have your abs pump rebuilt.

And damn sure don't get a rebuilt one. Buy a used one. Since they never fail they are cheap.

THanks for the tips, folks....I took the car to the L/M dealer thinking they know what they're doing...I'm going back to my regular mechanic who I trust.

Well, according to my trusted mechanic, the L/M dealer was right on...it is the hydraulic pump for ABS. It's sticking badly. He's going to try a complete brake system "flush" and see if it will unstick the cylinder. ($89.00)

Otherwise, it's a replacement pump for $1500.00+labor

I'll bet money its not anything to do with the ABS and flushing the brake fluid isn't going to help.

Question: If you back up hard, does the steering wheel want to pull the other way? If it does, my best guess is the RH lower control arm. Had it happen many, many times.

BTW, you should go see the service manager and ask him...."I spent $700 for what?" Raise a little cain to get your money back. Sounds to me like they were just guessing.

Wrecking yard abs shouldn't b more than say 60 bucks
When ya pull it off out of the yard you'll know how to put it back on.
If your not into to DIY , the yard will pull one for ya for a fee.
1500 is just nuts , these cars can b bought for that if not less .

Even thou this is 6 years old what peeves me off is the OP did not follow thru to the end with the problem here.

Same thing with mine, but lower ball joint was stuck. Cracked in my driveway, thank god I wasn't on the road!
