after driving on highway, feels off when back in city :Transmission??

ok im going to try my best an explain this problem, atleast i think its a problem

ok so like many of my problems this started about a year ago,

what triggers it:
driving on the highway, 60-70-80 mph (the 80 is on long stretches of Texas road), for more than an hour

Symptoms:
when driving on highway or stretches of road at high speeds, the car feel like its on Overdrive

the accelerator feels like its humming (like on a low gear) that's waiting to shift

when i get back on city streets the car is like a hyped up rottweiler on a short chain, meaning i stop at a red light getting off the highway and the car after i ease off the brake feels like it wants to go back up to highway speeds.

Troubleshooting:
so far all i've done was taken it to two tranny shops

One told me he'd have to break open the tranny and see what the problem was (after he test drove it)

the other hooked up the computer drove it around, but nothing came up on the computer , no codes no nothing
he just told me what i know from reading the forums that the tranny is finicky sometimes and its probably my style of driving that it learned.

i asked about a flush seeing if maybe that would work , and they both said that it wouldn't be a good idea considering the car has 179,820 miles on it, i asked about an oil change and they said it wouldn't hurt but it wouldn't guarantee anything either

*sigh* so any suggestions or advice, i hope it didn't come out as a babbling ramble

Weird, I've been having the exact same issue on my LS for the past two days. Have you been having issues where you try to accelerate from 60mph and the tranny downshifts but dosent up shift until you floor it?

this, plus sometimes when i go from highway speeds to a red light then back to driving it sometimes just sits there until i get off the accelerator and press it again, so it slips i quess
 
Disconnect your battery terminal connections for 30 minutes, grab a long screw driver, touch the + & - on the cables together (not the battery)
reconnect the terminal ends back onto the battery, start the LS, go for a drive around the city and keep it in 4th, do some highway and only pop it into 5th after high RPM.

She'll get back to normal ... I promise!
 
My LS has been doing the not shift down thing since the 2nd day I owned it.

I'm about 99% positive I have a broken 3-4 spring in the valve body...it refuses to shift to 4th some times and I have to punch the gas to make it down shift then it will behave again.

Just out of curiosity what are the RPM's when you are sitting at a stop light when it wants to race off?

torque converter clutch (TCC) ???



Transmission upshifting is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM receives inputs from various engine or vehicle sensors and driver demands to control shift scheduling, shift feel and torque converter clutch (TCC) operation.

The PCM has an adaptive learn strategy to electronically control the transmission which will automatically adjust the shift feel. When the battery has been disconnected or a new battery installed, certain transmission operating parameters may be lost. The PCM must relearn these parameters. During this learning process you may experience slightly firm shifts, delayed or early shifts. This operation is considered normal and will not affect the function of the transmission. Normal operation will return once these parameters are stored by the PCM.

Downshifts

Under certain conditions the transmission will downshift automatically to a lower gear range (without moving the range selector lever). There are 3 categories of automatic downshifts: coastdown, torque demand and forced (or kickdown) shifts.

Coastdown

The coastdown downshift occurs when the vehicle is coasting down to a stop.

Torque Demand

The torque demand downshift occurs (automatically) during part throttle acceleration when the demand for torque is greater than the engine can provide at that gear ratio. If applied, the transmission will disengage the TCC to provide added acceleration.

Kickdown

For maximum acceleration, the driver can force a downshift by pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor. A forced downshift into a lower gear is possible below calibrated speeds. Specifications for downshift speeds are subject to variations due to tire size and engine and transmission calibration requirements.



The powertrain control module (PCM) and its input/output network control the following transmission operations:

Shift timing
Line pressure (shift feel)
Torque converter clutch

The transmission control strategy combined with the engine control provides optimum powertrain operation under all conditions. When determining the best operating strategy for transmission operation, the PCM uses input information from certain engine-related and driver-demand related sensors and switches.

In addition, the PCM receives input signals from certain transmission-related sensors and switches. The PCM also uses these signals when determining transmission operating strategy.

Using all of these input signals, the PCM can determine when the time and conditions are right for a shift, or when to apply or release the torque converter clutch. It will also determine the pressure needed to optimize shift feel. To accomplish this, the PCM uses 3 pressure controls, 1 torque converter clutch and 4 shift solenoids to control transmission operation.




try it and see how she behaves, you posted you've been driving like this for a year now.
 
There was some sort of gas pedal pumping procedure to get the transmission learning points to reset. Something like turn key on, then key off, then key on, and pump the pedal 5 times. Something like that. I did it and it worked. Just don't remember the EXACT procedure.

Not too sure if your question was directed to the other guy, but mine sits at 1.1k-ish if I'm braking hard to a stop. It'll drop if I let the car roll for a bit. If I brake softly, it drops to 800-850rpm.

What I've notice is that if I release the brake while its at 1.1k rpm and press the gas, it takes off like a rocket ship. (Not exactly like a rocket ship but you get the point :p)
 
i was playing with the shifts, and it seemed to shift alot better when i manually did em no hard shift or anything ( i never driven manual so it took me a while to learn but after i got it down it was smooth) i dont have sst

and thus far it is beautiful, its freaking tourist season so i cant drive it long ways unless on highway, but in the city it feels beautiful

and bigrig i was just a little confused about driving it on 4th, do i just leave it on 4th gear on the shifter and drive like if i were in drive?

if i start having same issues ill give this a go before i try anything else , again thanks so much for the input
