Aftermarket HID alternative?

Good info.... However after reading about them it says that they do not get any hotter than a halogen bulb. I would like to find something that doesn't get as hot. After installing my new headlight housings and turning the lights on within a few minutes they were HOT already. Ford does give them a 1 year 12k warranty though.

This man knows what he's talking about. I have a set of aftermarket D2S bulbs installed in my 95, but i am also running Factory HID housings. I would have went with factory bulbs, but max said they are on national back order, and I would'nt have them in time for carlisle.

Mike

you should be running D2R bulbs. D2S are for projector style assy. (S2000 etc.)

So has anyone actually called Reinhart and found anything out about these housings?

driller, your car is absolutely beautiful. Out of all the body mods, out of all the colors, out of all the rims, and all the other junk, i truely love yours the best. I especially love how that lincoln emblem looks on there. Do you think youd be willing or able to get another one made up like that?

I did call. Here's the summary-

As has been mentioned here, Ford is back ordered on the HIDs. According to what I was told, they won't likely be available until January. And even then, it is expected that there will be a price increase, possibly raising the cost of new Ford HIDs to $1500.

Reinhart is just selling new halogen housing and HID retrofits, probably the same ones mentioned in this thread, for about $1,000. And since this set up isn't strictly DOT compatible, he has to tell you that and you have to assemble it yourself.

So, if you're in a pinch, he can put the kit together for you. But no significant savings over what we've all come to expect.

New owner of 94 MK8 seeks HID solution

I'm new and have done my best to read and understand the many posts on the headlight issue. I just bought my 94-M8 and love it but I drive at night a lot and I need to get new lights in the car or I will have to sell it. Its really unsafe after dark.

I met and spoke to some great people at Carlisle and heard the aftermarket HID kits were not really that usable. Even if they are I don't have the link. It sounds like the factory kit is OK but for the $$ I could sell my '94 and get a Gen II which apparently does not have this problem at all.

So can someone out there kind of net it out for me so I don't waste a lot of people's time? Thanks, Roger

Hey Roger....

As I stated before at Carlisle, In your piticular situation, you would probably be better off trading to a newer model. Either a 96 LSC, or a Gen2 base or LSC. Not only are the headlights better in the gen2's, the interior is better, and more comfortable. You stated that you do alot of driving, so I would assume that that is something that would appeal to you.

The Ford HID kits, ARE expensive, but if you like, and want to keep the car they are WELL worth the money. I have them on both of my GEN1's and will NEVER give them up.

I am NOT a fan of putting aftermarket HID kits into stock halogen housings. you are butting a bulb that has 3x the light output, in a housing designed to diffuse light differently than HID's should be. Glare, and oncoming drivers visibiliity will be affected more than some would like to admit.

anyway, I think that about does me in for the night, if you have anything you would like for me to clarify, or any more questions, feel free to ask away.

Mike

 Only problem is that the gen 2's dont look as good. That's only my personal oppinion though. lets just all sue ford and get free hid's!!!!:D
