amp upgrade trouble

I already replaced the stock subs with 2 way infinity 6x9s. This made the bass sound cleaner, however, it was not as loud as the factory speakers.


Now, I am in the process of upgrade the amp the a fosgate amp. Unfortunally the amp wiring is giving me trouble.

I am trying splice into the signal that went to the original sub amp(I do have audiopile system). Red/Red White Left, Red/Red Gray Right, silver tape as shielding. I am using an rca cable that I cut in half.

This rigged up low level outputs is not working correctly. The Red/Red Gray and shield do not make any sound. The Red/Red White make bass, but it is very staticy.

My Question. Why is only one pair of outputs not working, and why did my new speaker sound better with the sock amp?

And how do you connect the rca shield the silver tape. I tape breaks very easy.

Option of line convertor...

I'm new to this site, and I'm new to my LS. However, I have run into this before. The idea of taking standard posi/nega leads and turning them into RCA's never sounds good. There is a line convertor you can buy for about $10-$20 that will wire up with the two pairs of posi/nega leads and will output a Red and White RCA plug..and there's also a level adjustment on the unit too. This is the correct way to go about doing what you want to do. As I stated I'm new to the LS, and I was thinking of putting an amplified sub in the trunk by way of using a line convertor but hadn't gotten around to requesting the wiring diagram for the rear deck speakers yet. I'm going to request that now... I'm also curious if installing the line convertor is going to take away from the rear deck speakers since in some previous installs I have spliced the speakers in with the line convertor, allowing the speakers to still operate and providing the RCA's for the amp.

***- Also make sure you are using the output of the amp on the rear deck and not the input. In my experience the shielded cable is a digital input to the amp on Ford/Lincoln/Mercury models. You must use the output of the amp to hook up the line convertor.

I'm so confused! I've heard so many things!! Use a line convertor....no you don't need one!! which one is it!! all i want is to hook up some subs while keeping the factory head unit!! Somebody please help!

Try and relax...it's really not that difficult. Whoever is telling you not to use a line convertor is wrong. You have to use a line convertor on any factory head unit when hooking up an amp unless you want terrible sound quality. This thing is so simple to hook up if you know the wiring diagram coming off the amp. The question I have is that you mentioned a shielded cable, and that to me sounds like the input to the amp which is to be left alone. If you have already cut that shield you have put the integrity of the system in question since it now accepts electrical interference. It's not going to be very noticable, but hook it back and leave it alone. I'm going to try and request the amp wiring right now. You will need to cut the wires going from the factory amp to the rear deck speakers, and using simple wirenuts connect the leads (6-10") that are coming off of the line convertor. Once you do this you will have RCA outputs to hook up the amp.

STEP 1: Find the positive and negative of the left rear deck speaker, between the speaker and the amp. Splice the positive and negative and hook up the left channel of the convertor.

STEP 2: Find the positive and negative of the right rear deck speaker, between the speaker and the amp. Splice the positive and negative and hook up the right channel of the convertor.

STEP 3: Connect the RCA jacks to your amp, finish amp power/remote/ground wiring. Turn on the stereo, turn it up, turn on the amp, make adjustments on the line convertor according to your liking.
