'00 v8 just made a 10 hour round trip to NJ and back and averaged 24mpg going from 70-85 the whole trip. Check your tire pressure and it pays off!
Both should trigger a CEL when below efficiency though. Have you manually calculated your mileage, or are you simply going by what the computer tells you?
I use http://www.fuelly.com to track mine (it calculates it all for you, just punch in the distance travelled and amount of fuel added).

I always get between 24-26 MPG. My driving habits are consistent and a little agressive. Torrie's tune gave me 1.5 MPG increase. I tuned it over 100,000 miles ago, so I will just use the last 100K as a referance. I think that these cars get very reasonable mileage for their age and performance.

Just flew up to Ohio and bought my new LS. Drove it back to Myrtle Beach, SC. Got 29.79 mpg on the first tank. (hand calculated)
