How many times do you read a post saying "just wanted to tell you, so far my car hasn't needed any repairs". Not often I bet
It is the guy who has had something break that will post a complaint. Of the dozen plus cars I have owned in 35 years of driving and the handfull of family cars I have maintained, I have had 4 or 5 that have disappointed me. My 2004 ls is one of the disappointments. I won't say the model of car is bad, just that with this one I have not had a good experience in the 40K+ miles I have owned it. Bought it used so maybe some of the early problems were previous owner related, but still way too many problems for my experience. A rebuilt tranny at 15K, Coils at 45K, peeling chrome grill at 45K, Bad fuel pump at 40K, Bad wheel bearing at 45K, Bad ABS sensors, Cheap seat backs, had one replaced under warranty and now the other one is broken, jeez. Something like 3-4 weeks of shop time in 2 years and I could go on, but you get the picture. My LS is not near the average of satisfaction with other cars I have owned. So I AM a whiner in this case.
But I have had many excellent cars, my 79TA, 86 TurboCoupe, 96 ImpalaSS, 94 F250 etc. And I DO defend American cars on different webpages like this one, IF the car deserves it.
I have seen many Toyotas, Mazdas, Mercedes, BMWs etc that have far worse problems than even the LS, and when they do break it costs a ton. And believe me they do break, take a look at all the "import specialist" garages out there.
I had a friend who bought a BMW "fine German engineering" he said. The next year he got rid of it and bought a Pontiac. My Dad's 560 Benz blew the tranny and later had such a leaky engine he sold it cheap to the gardener. Lots of Euro and Japanese trash out there, and plenty of American too.
But in my opinion, American cars and many imports are far better cars than they used to be and far more reliable and maintenance free than the ones in the 70s and earlier. In my opinion American cars are an underated value. Hmmm, those Korean cars are starting to look mighty good as far as reliability, who would have thought this 20 years ago?
All cars wear out and each has it's quirks, so singling one out is possibly unfair, unless we have independent studies or owner surveys to go on. Not sure where the LS sits on this area, but mine has just about convinced me not to buy another Lincoln. I expect NOT to have any more significant problems for at least another 50K miles. If it does, you WILL hear me complain.
Just my experience,
Jim Henderson
