Hey everyone.
I've got a 2000 LS-8 Sport and have a few questions about the transmission. I've always had a 5.0 Mustang........so this is a different car by far. So here is what I wanted to get some input on: So, say I'm driving on the Interstate or highway or in town and I ease into the throttle (as in gradually and not very much applied). What seems to happen when I do this is the car raises its RPM'S a little bit then drops them down and continues with the acceleration. Like I said, I'm still getting use to this car as compared to my Mustangs (as this is also the 1st automatic i've ever driven). Any input on this would be appreciated. Is this a problem or is this just the way the transmission works? (also, I just bought it and haven't had the PCM reflashed yet so the car may not be used to my driving yet)

My first guess would be the lockup converter unlocking when you first accelerate and then locking back up again...Doesn't sound like anything to worry about ever automatic car I ever owned did that, if I am understanding you correctly.

Does not sound like an issue.

However, when the car shifts hard into each gear, especially slams into reverse, then take it back for service...

I traded in my recently purchased 04 LSE due to the transmission... Was not comfortable w/ the stifting issues and the dealership, in their old way, told me to pound sand - that's the way the car is - a hard shifter and over revs up 500 - 1000 rpms prior to entering the next gear...

I said the he11 with it and bought on 03 Mustang Cobra Convertible...

Hope you enjoy your LS... It is a nice car...

Yeah, when accelerating, most automatics will unlock the converter which ups RPM and then when the computer thinks things are set, it will relock and drop the RPMs.

Always bothers me how this works, I keep thinking it is slipping, but it is normal. Every auto I have owned since 1995 has done this. Some programmers can change the TC lock RPM range.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Thanks everyone for your input. It makes me feel better about this car. I'll tell you all one thing, it is definately different than my previous mustangs...........I guess I didn't know what to expect with the transmission on this car and now I know. Again........thank you.

Just wish they made the V8 with a man.trans............

I've had the same problem but I found out the hard way that the tranny has a slow shift, I've only had the car for a month and yesterday i decided to take it to the Lincoln Service shop and they took a look at the car and told me that the tranny is like that and that it's normal I had to pay a 100 dollar deductable to find that out oh and my driver side power seat engine also wasn't working for me either but that was covered under the ESP warranty!! :L

Yea...this transmission is like NO other. It has some positive traits and negative. I can't remember having a vehicle where the torque converter lock-up is SO noticeable. I have two of them, and they both do it. Also, I have driven about 4 others, and they are all pretty much the same, so not to worry.

I still have my 5spd Mustang when I feel like working out the left leg.

Speaking of Mustangs, blk04lse I hear they released yet another TSB for that ticking valve issue on the left head of those Cobra engines. The info was posted on flatratetech.com in the Ford section.

My previous car was an automatic Mustang, and I don't think the convertor lockup is as noticeable on the Lincoln as it was on the Mustang.

I think the main difference is the AODE doesn't release the lockup as often. Of course, I had a Baumann Kit and controller on my 5.0 Auto that I had in my Ranger. I am sure the rear gear makes a difference too.
