I was driving today on my way to Costco to get gas, the DTE display was at 1 mile to empty as i pulled up to the pump. It filled up with 17.77 gallons which according to my calculations meant there was about a quart of gas left in the tank. I stopped at the automatic shutoff, so i probably could have squeezed 18 gallons in. But I dont think a quart of gas would have lasted very long. Anyone else tested the limits of the gas tank? Anyone get to 0 miles to empty?

I'm sure all that gunk at the bottom of tank made it run 'super-fine' :) LOL good job not running out!

i run to zero all the time because I fill up EXACTLY twice a week that way (I hate pumping gas) - you'll get another 10-15 miles after "zero" before you run out. the John - i thought fuel pumps grabbed fuel from the bottom all the time. I would think the logic of grabbing "junk" cause your tank is near empty is flawed.

That is true and was thinking the same thing. I think that logic of there being "junk" is more due to it floating on top of the gasoline and therefore once low enough would start to be sucked in. But if the tank is indeed a 18 gallon tank plus whatever reserve there is in the system, i was pretty darn close to empty. I dont think i'll be pushing the sub-zero DTE anytime soon.

My wife ran out more than once in our '90 TC. It still had at least 1 mile, usually 2-3 miles (flat ground).

You would have thought she would have learned after the first time...

ls owners manual actually mentions there's "reserve" below zero. I can tell you it's not much (shame on me) lol

yeah most cars reserve on empty is usually 2 gallons, im use to this becuse I have owned nothing but subarus before my LS. 0 means zero on that sucker ahah. Ive driven on 0 miles to empty, and filled up about .25 gallons shy of the tank capicity.

Been below the red line many times... I know theres a 2 gallon reserve so I never push it over 40 miles past 0 DTE. Otherwise, I'd never get over 400 miles per tank ;)

I did run out of gas once... no, twice... about a mile from my house... on the highway.

man i be happy with 350 miles per tank.
you guys got any tips how i can bring this up its been stuck at 270 a tank for a while. I even let it shift under 3000 everytime so i'm not going crazzy on it.
NEED UR HELP.

Affirmative: bottom is the top when near empty :) I don't mind running mine low, but I am not trying for zero anytime soon...lol

I got my '04 down to 0 Mi. to Empty once; it hit 0 as I pulled into the gas station. I put 17.680 gal. in the tank, so there was less than a third of a gallon left when it hit 0...

Just filled up last night, 18.1 gal. premium here in central ohio is only 2.26 right now :)

I've routinely filled the car up to 18.5 gallons. There's a filter in the tank, one inline, and one on all the injectors... no crap is going to reach the motor.

Heard speculation that the cost of gas will be heading WELL below the $2.00 mark before the end of the year. Some analysts were predicting a country-wide average of about $1.40 a gallon. It'd be nice to fill the tank for under $30 again... hell, I'm happy I'm paying $45 to fill it!

You guys are right, the chance of getting junk from the bottom of the tank is not likely. The gas is always being slushed around, so why stuff does build up in the tank over a long peroid of time, it tends to stay stuck to the tank. There is a small chance that if you let your car sit with so little fuel over night on a regular basis that you could built up some water in the tank due to condensation. It would take the right weather conditions to happen though, so it is still a small chance of happening.

I heard a rumor that they were drilling from oil in Mexico and found 100 years worth of oil?? Anyone hear anything about that?

No, I haven't but I hope they did. It would really help Mexico's economy and our since we would be dealing with a country right next to ours. If there economy was to grow we would not have the border problems we have now.

Man, you guys have got to pay more attention to current events. That oil find in the Gulf was news a couple of weeks ago. It is the largest oil find in the US (larger than Prudhoe Bay), but it's not even close to a 100-year supply; if the top-end estimates are correct, the US would burn through it in three years. Plus, it won't be producing for another 9 years from the informed reports I've heard.

Stop driving so damn FAST.... Lol. J/K

I just took a trip to S/C. On the way back, with a trunk full of luggage, I averaged 25.2 MPG, driving between 65-80mph (anything over that, mpg drops).

425 mile range... With a V8... That is outstanding.

On my local daily commute, 18 miles highway 4 miles city... I can't average over 21 MPG. Typically around 350-360 miles per tank. Still very good.

update to earlier post...i just hit 0. my wife left me with 2 miles last night. i had to drop baby off at sitters, and go to work. been on 0 for about 1 miles or just over. good thing the mobil station is less than a mile away. when i get back from picking up my expedition this afternoon, heading right for mobil! don't want to push it.

I've gotten down to zero and driven another 10 miles, very risky but didnt have a choice since i was in the middle of ND between Fargo and Bismark.

In the manual it says that there are 3-4 gallons in the reserve tank (WOW!). So for the V8 guys, you coulg theoretically get 40 -60 miles out of it. Wouldn't test it though. We are Lincoln owners, we don't run out of gas. Anyone seen the gas prices lately? 2.36/gal for premium in Knoxville. I think the Lincoln's gonna see a lot more cruising in the next few weeks.
