In another post I saw it was seemingly inferred that only the driver side has auto dimming.

Can anyone verify?

News to me, if it in fact does, I sure have missed it over the years.

Where did you read this?

04 Mirror Question

A user named slagburn stated the following:

"Thanks for the quick replies.

I'm guessing the gasket is on the drivers side due to the electronics of the autodim in the drivers side that aren't in the passenger side."

I'm not sure if that's how it's intended to be but based on that I would think so. However I do recall something about when I used FORScan to find my door code I saw an error about the VIN of one of my mirrors not matching my cars VIN.

I don't recall exactly what the error was, I'll do some more digging tomorrow to see if there's more info about it. If anyone has the automatic dimming mirrors can you look and see if your passenger side does and let me know below?

Both mirrors work fine and operate properly in terms of adjusting them, yet only the driver's side and rearview mirror auto dim.

Never noticed an auto dim on the side mirrors, Drivers or Pass. o_O
Just occasionally on the rearview. But since my tint is dark it often does not matter if it dims or not. However, I did test the auto-dim tonight and the dome light alone enables it on the rear view (via rear sensor), but no effect on either sides.

I looked closer on mine and my driver's side has a gasket assuming for the electronics of auto dim but the passenger side does not

Hmmm, odd, that drivers side mirror looks to be a replacement possibly.
I honestly had not ever noticed the side mirrors capable of dimming.
The interior rear-view mirror does indeed dim, which can be selected on/off.

You've got me wondering now, I'll keep an eye on it ...

I have an 04 LS V8 I picked up a few months ago and yes, only the drivers door mirror dims (along with the rear view mirror).

Sort of odd because I just got rid of a 97 Mark VIII (which I had almost the whole 20 years) and it had both outside mirrors having the dim function. Another difference between the two was the Mark had instant fuel economy besides the average. Just seems cheap to remove that.

I probably should start a new thread for this but is there a definitive way of telling what the difference is between the LS Sport and Premium is? I have the SST transmission but I was also reading on here how the automatic windshield wipers were not on the 04's except later in the year on the Premium model (or something like that).

Not really anything I'm losing sleep over but my insurance company asked (twice actually) and I can't really see what the difference is. They have the vin number, told them to call Ford and let me know if they find out. Although the Marks had regular and LSC versions, at least the LSC's had it on the car somewhere.

Awesome ... learn something new everyday. That mine might be none-functional that is. Sure as heck never noticed nor paid proper attention to it.

Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirrors

This feature reduces glare caused by headlamps reflecting in the interior rear view mirror or LH exterior mirror. There are 2 integral sensors to control the dimming function. This feature is switched off by pressing the MODE switch on the interior rear view mirror to the OFF position. The auto-dimming interior rear view mirror defaults to the normal setting when the transmission is placed in REVERSE. The rear electronic module (REM) receives a reverse input from the powertrain control module (PCM) over the SCP communication link, then supplies a power signal to the interior mirror, causing the mirrors to cancel any dimming function. When the transmission is moved out of REVERSE, the auto-dimming mirrors return to normal operation and resume any interrupted dimming function.

If the REM does not receive the reverse input from the PCM, a communication diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is logged. As a default, the REM supplies power to the dimming circuit to prevent the automatic dimming function from operating until the communication is restored.

The transmission reverse information has a time delay before the message is sent by the PCM to the REM. This delay allows for the transmission selector to be moved through REVERSE without canceling the dimming operation.

Thanks for the research rigs.

My 03 has auto wipers and it's a sport. All 2006 LS s are sports. One way to tell is if you have wood trim on the interior. No wood trim = sport

Rigs I'm curious to know next time you drive if the driver's side only, apparently, one works for you haha I just always thought it's wired that sometimes two of my mirrors turn green and the passenger one doesn't lol, especially given that when new the car was $43,000 seems kinda stupid to get cheap on.

I guess getting cheap on the mirrors helped make other parts like the transmission more reliab... Oh wait.

Thanks for the research rigs.

Yeah, I was just doing some additional thinking (which can be dangerous at times)
I recall having played around with this feature before. The tint in my cars hinders with this.
It's activated by the dimmer switch on the interior rear view mirror. I tend to have mine OFF due to the tint, it becomes too dark of a greenish look. I've operated it before with either ON or OFF. Think I have it OFF most the time.

This would affect, why I never really noticed auto dimming of the drivers side mirror ... I suppose.

I'll try it some more next night time outing, now that this has been brought to 'light'

Honestly dumb-founded, never really noticed nor paid much attention.
Objects in mirror are usually losing, so little time spend looking at 2nd place winners. ;)

That's the spirit always look forward!

No wood trim = sport

unless its a premium sport...

Guess this must not be applicable to the Canadian released Sport models.

Yes, the gen II driver's side mirror auto dims It is controlled by the interior rear view mirror.
