the d-3 is the highest end of the d's, they also have avic z1,z2,z3 the ones are the cheaper ones, the 3's are the expensive ones, my father in law had the avic z-2 but thats all i can tell you about them!
I have a D2 in my mark and am very happy with it. The only thing I dislike is the sirius interface, but that is a problem with all of the pioneer units. www.avic411.com will have more info on them. If you're going to watch dvds you'll need a d3, or an external player for the d1 or d2.
thats why my father in law sold his because he misread and thought his played dvd's, but only with an external player would it do this, so he sold it, now he is looking for a d-3
I had a D2 in my 95, and a D3 in my F250. I liked the D2 alot more than the newer unit. With the d2 you have dual dvd drives which allows you to load the navi disc in the lower drive and forget about it.
With the D3, you only have one drive to work with. This means you have to insert the dvd everytime you want to set a route and destination. On long road trips you have to re-insert the navi disc to upload new route/POI/and mileage information when the stored info has been used up.
If you can find one, the D2 is the way to go IMHO.

EDIT: The D3 WILL play dvds, but most states in this country prohibit in-dash dvd players so whats the point?
