my 2001 lincoln ls with a 3.9l v8 broke the oem timeing chain tensioner and in turn broke the secondary timeing chain and bent two exhaust valves, i am going to removed the engine and make the repair's, is there anything i should do when i have it out? aftermarket cams? intake? what else do i need to upgrade besides the secondary timeing chain tensioner with the metal in them
 
If it cracked the case, your fu@cked..
There is no aftermarket cams or intake for this car that I know of.
Your going to have to see which chains are broke and replace them. I think it would be cheaper to just replace it all for insurance.
 
You can do custom cams. There are no aftermarket premade cams though. The only intake other than stock is what comes with the SC kit.
 
it will be cheaper to just buy a used complete motor and just put it in. www.car-parts.com unless you really know what your doing. be very careful when removing the buckets under the cams. they need to go back in exactly how they came out because the cams have worn the shims over the years.

call compcams they said theyd do regrinds. have to send them the cams and then theyll do it. it would be awesome if you did this and it went back together and lasted more than a year. the shims under the cams are critical
 
thank you for all the information im a diesel tech for a living so im going to try and build it, i have been fighting the engine trying to get it out for the last two nights and it looks like im going to have to drop the cratle and pick the car up to get it out, any advice for removing the engine? i will post pics when i get it out thank you for all your help.

Why are you pulling the motor just to replace the chains? I replaced all the chains, guides, tensioners, and crankshaft seal without pulling the motor. I even had to remove the driver's side head to have it machined. It's not too difficult especially since you're a mechanic. You do need some special tools to set the timing though. They have a guy on ebay that rents the tools out. Good Luck!!
 
hes got to replace bent valves also, and likely rebuild the motor. which requires machine work, which requires it to be out of the car. just my guess

ive never pulled the v8 but the 6er comes out the top real easy. undo your hood props so u can stand the hood all the way up or just remove it
 
pic's any advice on the timeing chain install would be grate i will remove the cover as soon as i get a harmonic balance tool can i get this engine in time with out the tools? i will upgrade my timeing chain tentioner with the metal ones, that is what caused all the problems. i found a used head with the cams at a good deal. any thing else while i am in there?

was it in piston #2? looks like you can see where the two valves hit the piston top - hope it's not too damaged...

replace the valve cover gaskets - although they are reusable, a redesign in late 2002 cured an issue with oil getting into the spark plug wells.
 
I wanted to remove the engine alone but this became more than i wanted to deal with so i made a cradle and droped everything was a hole lot easier and when i go back in it will be plug and play, i wanted to remove the engine because i thought there might be piston damage but it able to be reused thank you for the advice about the v/c gaskets, dose anyone know if you can set the timeing without the special tools if so any help would be grate, thank you chris
