Bore out the 3.9?

ive looked around on the forums and couldnt find any definite answer, but would it be practical to bore out the 3.9, to say a 4.1 or 4.2. From what ive read forced induction sounds like thousands of dollars to either turbo or super. Figure i could buy a donor block, bore it out, and maybe get the crank reground to increase the stroke, then swap out blocks? sounds cheaper to me. This would be on 2004 LS8 sport.

just doing some brainstorming but any input is appreciated. Thanks
 
If you do this, I would go .20 over and sleeve the block. If I were to do this, it would be rods and pistons @ 12.5:1 with a full valve train setup. Doing the math you could get a little over 400 all motor on a good tune.
 
Not worth the cash imho. Iirc QuikLS did have a set of first gen heads p&p'd awhile back and did see some decent gains but didn't end up using them on his sc build. Another member had his cams custom ground but ran into problems and ended up selling it. If you're honestly looking at making more power with a 2nd gen V8, I would go with a rear mount turbo set up.
 
well knowing controversial effectiveness and having to have all the custom lines run back to the turbo worries me. if im going to top out at 330-340, it may not be worth it. going to do alittle more research on engine swap solution. i know many have thrown around the idea of swapping but i feel like a 2v 5.4 swap would be a feasible build. wouldnt happen for a few years but i could get a long block and start rebuilding it. thanks for the input.
 
With all due respect, you're worrying about things that're really within the bounds of everyday fabricating. The amount of power you make with a turbo set-up is entirely dependent upon the amount of boost you create, and that is only limited by the quality of your interior components.

The AJ engine line is available, in Europe in sizes from a little over 3 litres to 5 litres. Engines are readily available here in the States, from recyclers,

:eek: lol. Those 5.4s are huge! And the 2 and 3 valve ones are dogs. Lots of torque maybe, but huge weight as well. Little top end. It is a truck motor after all. If you're interested in something like that, a 4.6 based 4v (Mark viii or 96-98 cobra) could be a lot more power with a lot less weight.
If you've got the time and cash, a bored, stroked 4.6 (now a 5.3) has some pretty incredible potential. Escpecially packaged in a light strong mark viii teksid aluminium block.

Lots of options, pick one and go for it!
If a chevy LS motor can be put in one these, you can do all kinds of things.
 
im not really familiar with AJ engine line up at all so if you had an info or links where i could read up would be greatly appreciated. and as for the 5.4, i was always under the impression it was the same block as the 4.6, just bored out. id really like to see a 4v 5.4 shelby block under there but theyre very expensive. had not thought about bore/stroking a 4.6, which would probably easier/cheaper. thanks for the info
