I am looking to buy a used instrument cluster for $20 from someone local. There shouldn't be any problem as long as I get my data transfered at the dealership correct? It will also bring over my mileage as well correct? I just want to make sure its possible to do with a used cluster before I purchase it. Anything else I should look for?

The reason why I am buying a new cluster is my air bag indicator blew, and :( and Ford decided not to let you just replace the blown bulb. Also, how much would it typically cost to have a dealer transfer the data? I plan on doing the uninstall/install my self and just bringing the two clusters to them

Thanks for any input.

I think that the dealer has to have to whole car to marry the new instrument panel to the other modules. I seem to remember reading that the anti-theft stuff might keep it from running till then.

Yes bring it to the dealer and have them install it because they have to load the data from your old cluster on the their computer and then install your new culster and transfer the data,if it is not done correctly your seat belt chime will not go off when in reverse and your cruise control light will flash when you are going over 70mph, i know this cause i just had this done on my car.

Yeah, I know I have to have a dealer do the data transfer. So I should just leave the old one in my car and have them do it all?

How much does this typically cost?

just want to bring back this thread

I purchased an 02 V8 LS, and I have the problem with the chime in reverse and a warning message when I go over 70mph.

What can I do?

probably do a carfax to get your correct mileage. You may have been duped..i believe that the mileage is stored in the cluster, not the computer so you probably have alot more miles than you think................maybe. It has the symptoms of not being installed correctly so the correct miles wee prob never loaded either..

No i think its stored in the PCM and not in the cluster....

this is not correct. The mileage is stored in the cluster module.

lincoln00 - did you even read the posts above?

if you swap clusters - as stated above - you have to have the dealer fix it - otherwise it will trip the tamper alert (meaning it beeps over 70mph and in reverse).

I understand the 70MPH and reverse thing but i could have sworn it was stored in the PCM

im probably wrong

That's for gen 1s. Gen 2's won't start until done at the dealer.
I have a metric gen 1 faceplate that I put onto a spare gen 2 cluster. Pulled the needles off and put them back after swapping faceplates.
When we put it in the car the guages came on but the car wouldn't turn over.
Maybe this spring I'll swap that faceplate into the original cluster in my car so no marrying problems.
I'll let you guys know how accurately the needles work after re and re ing them.
This is the only way to have a gen 1 looking cluster in a gen 2 car and visa versa.
