Bye Bye Lincoln - Buyback Option

I'd be willing to be that article is only talking about body components, not incuding drivetrain or suspension.

Hell, you have 80+ pounds just in wheels alone. I have a difficult time believing the tranny casing, hood, trunk, radiator, rear diff housing and engine components just to name a few are only 176lbs. Even if you give a lenient 10lbs for each fender and 20 each for the hood and trunk, 15 for the radiator, 5 for the condenser core, that leaves you with 96# for the tranny casing, all 4 lower control arms, the rear diff cage, the rear diff housing, the knuckles, the brake calipers, the throttle body and many many more parts.

I'm not buying 256lbs total.

Not 256 lbs, not 2,000 lbs, 262 lbs.

Here in canada when something is written off they give the value of the car back... why are they only giving you $1800??

I can buy the car back from them for $1,800. They get salvage bids from junkyards so they can recoop as much as possible. The owner has the option to first dibs on the buyback. So if I want the car back, I can buy it for the high salvage bid price.

As far as whether or not I am going to do that is dependant on how much interest there is. Right now its just little stuff, so I will get what I can off of it, but will probably let the salvage yard come get it.

Why would you want to buy it back? It would have a salvage title and be completely worthless if you ever want to get another car down the road.

If he parts it out what does buying another car have to do with this?

Its not like anyone would be dumb enough to try and trade it in.

I can see that for the body panels, suspension, and other miscellanea, but there's no way that 262 lbs. can include the engine and transmission. Shoot, the engine block alone should weigh almost that much. According to this source, the "fully dressed" Jag 4.0 AJ26 weighs in at 441 lbs, and the AJ30/35s in our Lincolns use substantially similar blocks.

I think the weight (including the powertrain) is significantly less than 1000lbs, but it has to be more than 262 lbs...

Not all of that weight is aluminum, cylinder liners, crank, cam and etc are not aluminum. Aluminum alloy also is not pure aluminum.

All,

The ol' Lincoln got totaled last week when a guy in a 2006 GMC Sierra took a left turn from the right lane in front of me while I was in the left lane. We were both going the same direction. Anyways, his fault and they are totaling it. The high salvage bid was $1,850 and I have first dibs if I want to buy it back for that amount. Is there anybody interested in anything on it? If I can get enough interest to keep it, I will buy it back.

The damage doesn't look bad at all. The rest of the car looks nice. I'd buy it back and fix it. The title will probably be branded as salvaged which will reduce your resale value but I don't see it costing you much to fix it even if it needs to be put on a frame rack.

Please cite your source. You can't tell me that the wheels, engine, transmission, hood, A-arms, rear diff housing and more are only 262 lbs.

I've honestly never had an LS empty trans case and engine block in my hands but I'm sure they don't weigh in the same area as other automatic transmission cases and aluminum blocks. You can lift an aluminum 351W block with one hand. The same goes for an empty C4, C6, TH400, etc transmission case.

The only purpose to buy-back would be to part it out. And milk it for all its worth before sending it to the scrap grave yard.

It was 10k in just sheet metal, rim, doors, windshield, etc. He didnt even start to factor in the electrical and motor. The fuse panel was toasted, and the motor sat crooked. It would surely cost more to fix it than it is worth. Even using scrap parts.

Damn, that sucks. I guess its worse than it looks. Sorry to hear. I think you could still part it out and be money ahead.

All,

Sent the LS with the Salvage company, and this is what I still have in the garage if anyone is need of them, otherwise they are going to get trashed.

Trunk net.
Center Console - Light Grey
Stock Air box.
Brake Rubber Grip/Cover.
Rear dash bottom cover for trunk.

You can get a pretty good price on the center console for the folks wanting to upgrade their 2000 LS.
