calling all LS Owners

no, no pricing yet, but I would expect it to be right in line with the mustang ones.
as for you being sick, I forwarded that to GMS as more proof of how seriously we want them.

now on the performance/durability issues, the marginal performance of the coil is what is causing real performance and durability issues. If the coil is made to a higher level and to a better spec and it just performs as it is designed then I think that we will be in good shape total performance wise.

Good news people,
We have some activity.
My GMS contact told me today that they have gotten in about sixty coils to test, measure dimension, burn up and rip apart to develop prototypes from.
Which is great, its the first step to making us much better coils. If they do all this destructive testing, they will know what steps to take to make us better coils.

I did ask if all the coils were only for the V8 and was told no, that they were analyzing both the V6 and V8 coils. Which is also great news for us V6 people.

He did say that we should keep the pressure on with emails if at all possible.
so if anyone is just reading this now, send me an email.

I'm going to post this to the other forums as well.

faith has nothing to do with this.
It's like my Sensei says,
'Say I will do it, Not I will try.
TRY - means that you think you cannot and are already defeated, WILL says that you believe in it and shall overcome in the end.'

AAAAAAAAGGH,
Friday morning I had to pick up the LS from where my wife works (She suddenly was so ill that my dad had to run over and pick her up in his truck and bring her home Thursday afternoon).
I started it up and go to drive it home, I get about 50 ft across the parking lot and the CEL comes on. The car is sort of shuddering every so often, but it seems to drive okay otherwise so I drive it the seven miles home.
I did not get a chance to put my scan tool on it and needed to drive it to work this morning. It started fine, ran fine, but the CEL stayed on.

late this afternoon, I get home and finally get a chance to put the scan tool on the car

I get these trouble codes.
p0133 - O2 sensor 1 on bank 1 slow to respond.
p0301 - coil number one misfire
p0303 - coil number three misfire.

I thought "Okay so I have to the O2 sensors when I do the COP's"
and cleared the codes for now.

I drive my older son over to the mall to grab some clothes that he needs for something with school tomorrow and when I come out the LS shudders and flips on the CEL again.

Again the same three codes are registered, I cleared them and then set monitoring the pending codes section and the output graphs of the first o2 sensors.
I can see that the bank one sensor is changing a lot slower than the bank two unit.

I even tried shutting down and restarting a couple of times but the misses have not come back nor has the pcm detected anything else.

Now I'm wondering how this is going to play out. Will GMS get a real move on and build some cops before my failing two really take the motor down?

Actually, that was Yoda... Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back :)

yeah I know its a variant on what Yoda said, except I have a video tape of my teacher saying it before the movie was shot.

It's funny, I cleared the CEL twice now and the weather got warmer for yesterday and today. So far no Cel for anything, maybe if the indian summer holds a little bit longer, I can hold out for the HD coils.
In the mean time I'm ordering my o2 sensors and gonna do all of them at once

Funny, my CEL hasn't turned off from my last misfire. With the past couple coils that I've replaced, the CEL went away after the third start/drive cycle... this one is lingering on. I suppose I'll do the battery disconnect this week.

My 2001 LS V8 with 73K miles is showing a misfire on cylinder 1 so I'm about to face the inevitable. When I do this I am going to do them all so I’m definitely on board for a reliable alternative.

Kudos for doing what it takes to make this happen!!!

Okay gang, I've been really busy. Between the new Job, training and trying to manage some family junk I have not been ontop of GMS or the other source for a couple of weeks,

But tomorrow I will be calling them both, I have to do something in the middle of the 13 hour shift to break up the boredom.
Hopefully we will have some good news

keep up the great work bro we all appreciate it. still have the blown headgasket on the mustang sc lol hopefully fixed soon though

Yeah I know how that is, the Pathfinder (aka the winter tank) has one that just started to seep, so I'm willing to try the blue devil stuff.
It is guaranteed to seal a minor leak like I have or they will pay for some percentage of the repairs.
I figure that since the suv has 178,000 on it and the motor has 75,000 on it I don't really have much to loose.
if it works or atleast lasts until spring then great, if not then the manufacturer gets to help pay for the motor work.

In the mean time I'm trying to enjoy the motorcycle riding I do every day as I commute to work.
The 54 miles one way equates to about a 1.1 gallons of regular gas so I can afford to fill it up every 2.5 days. All my other vehicles with in easy reach use much more gas per mile and/or need premium (which is still 2.35 a gal here) or are down for repairs that I have not had time for.

hi ho, its off to work some more I go. Time to research manual transmissions again (the TR8 split the gear case again!).

Thought I would post that I talked to like 5 LS owners(3 v8 and 2 v6s) that said if they were made they would be very interested. They shop my store all the time but do little online things but I told them I would keep them informed.

Hey gang, I did not forget this quest, nor did our people at GMS.
They are working on a couple of small issues, that are holding them up right now, but the development continues.

While it has not been the 1-2-3 development cycle that we have hoped for, they are working on them. I promised to check back in with him in a couple of weeks and see how they are making out.

UPDATE!!!:

GMS is still working on developing our HD COP's.
The latestest is they are 99% sure that they have found the design flaw and reason behind the failures of the OEM coils and can remove the issue from their design. Apparently it has something to do with how ford has specified the exact pattern and windings of the coils.
As our contact put it,
"The weakness is in every single coil that is made to fords specification. It is great enough that the failures fall in the when, not if category. Only by changing the wire, the windings (which I guessing means number of turns and strands) and the pattern of the windings will the problem be corrected"

I asked him to ask his engineers to rate the Ford coil on a 1-10 scale and he said they already said that the ford coils were less than a 3!

They are currently testing a preliminary design to confirm its correction of the problem. If this design is proven to solve the durability issues and offer most of the speculated performance increases, then they will finalize the design for production runs.

Also for the V6 people, the engineering team think the V6 versions will take less time to prototype since they feel that the V6 coils share the same weaknesses as the V8's

Hey JES, forget all this coil stuff. I wanna know when are you going to swap out your auto tranz for a manual in the LS.

Any updates? I hate to seem impatient but I've got to address a coil issue SOON:eek: ! Additionally, I've decided to keep the LS which means new valve cover gaskets, coils, plugs, at least one fuel injector and new sway bar bushings. Heck, maybe years from now a well cared for good running LS will actually be worth something:D .

Well, what is the status on these coils. I was coming home tonight and stepped on it and it sputtered like it ain't nobody's business. I have a feeling I'm about to drop some cash on coils.

no news this week,
At the last check in call my contact told me that they were trying to engineer out the "major design flaw" in the coil windings that makes ours burn out. I'll call monday when I get a minute.
I feel the need for new coils too gang, I drove the LS tonight to pickup some medicine for the wife and it was shaking like a paint mixer at the light. With the outside temp in 30F and the cel now on again, I know that I will have to get them soon.
I just wish GMS was parallel developing the V6 cops with the V8 ones, not waiting until the V8 ones were finished to push the v6 units through.

I know that I do not want to have to tear it all apart to replace the cop's only to do it again when the GMS units come out.

Count me in!

I've had 1 coil replaced already(warranty), and have needed to replace another for a while now(out of warranty).

I would definitely be interested in a set of aftermarket coils if they were designed to outlast the OEMs.

I e-mailed this to you also JES.
