Looking to get my first SLR. What do you guys reccomend? Was thinking the nikon d40/d60 or the cannon rebel xs / xti

I have an olympus e 500 kit. It came with 2 lenses, battery pack charger software usb cables strap and the all the lense covers. Its not a rebel but its a real good beginer slr. I got mine for less than $600 at circuit city it was a display model

I dont even have a camera, just a Flip HD camcorder.

I heard lots of good stuff about both but I think the Nikon is the #1 choice.

I will give Nikon the advertising advantage, because they are all over. I don't see much Canon advertising.

I personally prefer Canon. I've tried both, and Canon was more "intuitive" if that makes any sense. I found it easier to take a good picture with the Canon.

I forget the Nikon model I tried (I think it was the D40), but the Canon model was the Rebel XT.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XSi, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

As for the Nikon vs. Canon issue, it depends on when you ask the question; they jockey back and forth for the top slot. From what I've seen and read, Canon is currently on top (something about the sensors, IIRC), but it won't be long before Nikon leapfrogs them.

You should also take a look at the new Sony Alphas. Up 'til recently, I wouldn't have given two cents for Sony cameras, but the Alphas are based on the Minolta camera lines they bought a few years ago, and they're getting some good reviews (I know a few people who have them and really like them).

The one big caveat to DSLRs (and SLRs in general) is that you're buying into a platform. Once you buy a DSLR, you're likely to drop some money on extra lenses, which means your next camera is likely to be one of the same brand, unless you want to buy all new lenses. I don't know about Nikon's range, but if you go with Canon's EOS line, the EF lenses will fit everything from the entry-level Rebel XS to the $8K 1Ds Mark III (the EF-S lenses will fit the XS through the 5D).

Thanks for the tips, pretty much decided on the Canon. These models seem to be very closely comparable, and I just dont see paying 300 more for a Nikon just because its a nikon.

Thanks again

Was looking at DSLRs a few months ago, didn't think to much of any I tried out until I picked up a SONY Alpha 700. Loved the way it felt in my hand and the way the controls were laid out. It kind of made the Canons and Nikons look and feel kind of cheap to me.

A plus for me, but not the reason I bought the camera, was that I can use some of my old Minolta lenses and flashes with it.

Another thing with the SONY is the image stablization is built into the camera body, not the lenses like Canon and Nikon, so lenses cost a little less if you plan on buying a lot of glasss.

Let us know what you end up with.

P.S. SONY makes alot of the sensors other camera makers, like Nikon, use.

I am 95%sure I decided on the canon rebel xs. Its had great reviews from all the ones ive read. I dont need (cant afford) a top end camera, and dont have any other lenses i could use so I am starting fresh. I like the self cleaning feature and i read the image stabilizer works good. I think its the best bang for the buck, and will be a good starter cam.

I shoot exclusively with the Nikon D50 and couldn't be happier. Can't be beat for the current going price.

Heres some samples.

Just remember it's the photographer that makes a good photo, not the camera. Every camera out there is capable of recording good pictures.

Think about what type of pictures you plan on taking and what size prints you'll be making, if any, and make sure the camera you choose is a good tool for what you plan on doing. I had some issues with certain cameras when I did a lot of sports photography

Going Canon, Nikon, Sony, or Olympus is a choice you may have to live with for some time if you plan on purchasing more gear in the furture. Once you have $$$$$$$ and experience with a particular system your next camera will most likely be from the same manufacturer so you can use the stuff you already have. (You did look at Olympus cameras? They make some unique stuff)

Those are some nice pics man! I got for Christmas the Sony Alpha A200. It was amazing!! I really wanted the Canon XS but the parents were buying it,and I am more than happy with what I have now. :)
I have a blogspot that I am playing around with the pictures I took with it. Its nothing special, but I just LOVE to take pictures!
The Sony is a real winner in my book,I've spoken with a few photographers and they said that I most certainly didn't go wrong or cut any corners when I got this one.
The only reason I wouldn't recommend any particular one is because this is the only DSLR that I've ever had or even messed with. :)

The camera to get is a Fuji S2...
This is a professional camera that you will find on Ebay.
It is worth 10 amateur camera you will buy and it will last.
I have being a professional photographer for 27 years use Hasseblad to Nikon F3 until today this camera amaze me.
The best part you should not pay more then $350.00 on Ebay

Doesn't that camera use a bunch of AA batteries plus a couple lithium batteries? What kind of battery life have you been getting with it?

You referring to me? lol I'm posting up more pictures as we speak...or type rather. Not all of them were taken with my Sony, there are some I took with my Fujifilm Z5 that I paid 180 for.

Well I went ahead and bought the rebel xs, and I am more than happy with it. It seems so easy to use! It takes great pics, I only have a couple so far and havent downloaded any to my computer yet, but I will soon.

Ok here are the first few pics I took. Random stuff around my house, and a couple that shows my 2 hobbies can work together. ;)

These were taken at the lowest settings for size and quality, kit lense 18-55, everything on auto.

Fuji D1, S2 and S3

Yes on a day to day base they use a lots of batteries but you get rechargeable one as the quality try to imagine most common camera sold on the market are over rated as a conventional S2 will take a picture of 17 meg.
I use Photoshop CS2 on a 2GB of ram as I dig deep in the raw format I have so far never seen the bottom of the pixel also imagine a camera that take a picture of 36 inch by 48. Do you imagine the resolution at an average 8x10 that most common peoples will print?

Picture on the web are very deceiving the resolution is low and most time they will still look good. The best way is to go place on the web where professional product are compare...

Talking noise on the picture, resolution, color balance, and most important the CCS that capture the image.

Camera are mostly like Motorcycle You never gone see someone riding a Harley tell you " no Dude not a Harley, you need to buy a Honda"
:D
