can i hurt my tranny?

Hey everyone,

I have a quick question.........my car has the same shifting problem into reverse (only sometimes) and never has problems shifting through the gears in the city/highway. I haven't taken the car in to get the PCM flash done yet, but from reading some other posts and that didn't always fix it. So my question is........if it is the solenoid pack and the other component (vavle body, I think) what are the possible outcomes of not fixing them right away? I just did valve cover gaskets and 100000 mile tune-up and tires and am a little short on cash this month. Am I going to hurt my car or ruin a transmission or am I simply looking at having this inconvenience till the next payday? Thanks a lot and you have all been helpful

I do not know enough about the problem to make a judgement call on the potential for long term damage but it should be safe to continue to operate the car.

you have to change the gear in SST.

I'm not quite sure on that question. I think the select shift is too big of a hassle so I haven't tried it out yet. Plus, I'd rather drive an actual man.trans. than some computer controlled POS. I dont know, there is just something about having a clutch pedal and really being in control of the car that makes it fun. (My other car is a 1985 Mustang GT convertible with the man.trans. Only 5500 of those made).

Agreed...as much lag on that manual shifting as in auto. I would just use it in the mountains on certain hills and such. As El Es mentioned, you do have to manually shift it. My wife borrowed my car and thought she was in D4 (like a non-sst car) and was driving my car around town in 2nd the whole time. DUH! She wondered why it had so much more pep then hers. :slam

If I start having problems with my tranny, I will probably drive it until it is totally broken and replace it with a new one.

BTW...I had an 85 GT t-top car. Man, I miss that car. Hail damage destroyed it. I couldn't look at it anymore and sold it. I don't get that attached to my cars anymore. I thought I was going to keep it forever. Worst hail I have ever seen. Had to have the house repaired too! They looked like UFOs coming down!!! Sorry for getting side-tracked...

I am with you lsbit on the tranny fix if it ever goes again. I will drive the :q :q out of it and replace with a new one.
