Can that plastic/chrome around the bumpers and trunk be painted?

I took my 01 LS to a body shop to see about getting that chrome plastic trim that's on the front and back bumpers painted. They said there are oils in the plastic and the paint will flake off, so they refused to paint it.

Is this true, or was the job just too small and they didn't feel like F'ing with it?

That is crap! The painter I use for all of my grilles says that it can be painted as long as it is prepped correctly. Find yourself another painter.

I did a how to on painting the grille and license plate surround a while back. I painted the chrome using paint from Paintscratch.com. As long as the part was prepped right the paint never chipped or came off. You can view that how to guide here:

You can also paint the factory black side skirts and front chin spoiler, as well as the rear valence thing. And you can paint the B Pillars as well, you can basically paint anything if properly done, like Ken said.

I hate when they look crappy and shiney or w/e...you know what I mean.

What Ken said. They fed you a line of bovine excrement. You can easily do the job yourself following the same instructions Ken provided. Prep is the key!

You might have to sand the "chrome" off to get the paint to stick, im not sure. But it can be done. I had thought about doing that too, but then I decided I kinda like my chrome. It matches my wheels. I may add more one of these days.

I think it would be really cool to have the LSE kit with chrome trim too, but thats just me.

This is good, I will ask around. I do work in a finishing/painting shop. I could actually do this myself if I wanted to. I gave my old Infiniti a paintjob there. It was a pain in the ass though because the sprayboot was very small and I didn't have much room to work. It still came out nice except on the roof, I had a hard time with the roof of the car. But now we have a bigger spray booth.


Can that chrome be taken off, or does it need to be taped off and done in place?

Also, what about the inside trim. You know, the fake rubber wood parts, can that be painted I wonder?

Painting Inside Trim

The interior wood can also be redone the same way. Hardest part is removing everything with out damage! Note: The 2003 and up LS have real wood. I really can not tell the difference!
