I have been thinking about changing my factory stereo out for a Hard Drive based Navigation system. But I am not quite sure which one to go for, I basically want the most bang for the buck. I am still on the fence though because I don't want to loose that factory look by taking out the head unit, I want a unit that will fit in the dash seamlessly. Any ideas?

I'd like to see some ideas too. Other than the pioneer AVIC-D3. Something under a grand.

i recently installed the Kenwood DNX-7100 in my wifes new expedition and it has really good navigation. I am on the fence about installing this model or the avic-z2 in my LS.

The reason I bought the 7100 for the wife is that it has a garmin navigation. one of the very few complaints i heard about the z1/2 is that the navigation software let a little to be desired. I do not necessarily rank the navigation as high of a need for myself.

Also the 7100 has a USB ipod connection that is super fast and also plays ipod video.

Good luck, you really cant go wrong, just figure out what is most important to your needs.

IMHO... theres NO other way to go than the Pinoeer AVIC-D3.. it may be a little cliche to throw that unit out in a thread about nav/dvd but a buddy of mine just got one and i was asked to set it up for him.. i spent about two hours on it tweaking frequencies and just playing with it... its so advanced youd think youve got a pc run straight into your car. oh and we ran 4 out of his 10 speakers off the unit and it sounds amazing.

I have an Alpine IVA-W205 with the Blackbird II nav. Deff more than a grand, but it's a great combo. Portable nav that docks into the radio and displays on the screen. Blackbird came with a cradle and power adaptor so I can take it out of my car and put it in the wifes car in about 2 secs.

I got the W205 off ebay and the Blackbird from Crutchfield. About $1400 invested.

The Avic D3 is a GREAT unit for the money, but by no means perfect.

Had mine for about a year now, and fully satisfied, BUT there are a few annoying quirks.

No RDS. I have NO idea why they didnt include RDS. Very annoying to get used to listening to the Ipod or Satellite (both of which display artist, song, album, etc) then go to FM for a change of pace, and have NO available info showing for a song.

No Album Artwork displayed when using the Ipod. Another annoyance. I spend a fair amount of time tagging my MP3's to include the album artwork. Displays nicely when I use my Ipod by itself. any reason why Pioneer couldnt at least give us the option of having the Album artwork appear on the display?

Bluetooth blues. It works fairly well, but the contact information is fairly quirky. Incoming calls from known contacts that are listed in my Treo dont display as the contact info on the headunit, just the number with "unknown user" or some such label.

Granted, the list of pros FAR outweighs the cons, but just didnt want anyone to think its perfect by any stretch

those are some good cons on it ive not seen or thought of (i dont own). those are also some really good +'s to have on a unit. do you know a head that does all of this? im in the market as well.. made me think twice about buying an avic.
