Hey guys, I have an 03 Lincoln LS with 3.9L. I am looking to remove my cats and am having a hard time with the studs nearest the engine. On both side I was able to remove the studs that point out from the car. Does anyone have any tips on how to remove both cats? Thanks

I still don't see how I'd fit any wrench in there. Is this something you've done?

A "gas wrench" would be a torch......

Maybe a socket on a long extension? I haven't looked at the connection...

Oh OK I was thinking literally a gas wrench. I tried the socket with lock extension and the socket was on an angle so was couldn't turn it enough. Also didn't have room for swivel joint.

Sometimes, a lot of extensions will help get you there because you can get the wrench action away from the car. If the angle is just a bit off, you can get an extension with a wobble end to let you get a bit of an angle on it.

I use a a few items to get to them

(from nuts to wrench) deep socket > U-joint > 6" extension > U-joint > 6" extension > ratchet wrench.

I tried to keep them as straight/lined up as possible, and held the whole thing steady by holding my free hand on the extension closest to the socket.

I also sprayed it with liquid wrench and let it soak for an hour before I started.

OK I'll need to get one more u joint but I'll give that a go tomorrow. I soaked it in liquid wrench again when gave up this afternoon so hopefully it's not so stuck.
