CEL came on the other day reading P0304 (Cyl 4 Misfire) and P0174 (Bank 2 Lean). Now it has a slight ticking or knocking coming from the front passenger side. I paid a shop to do a full diagnostic test but they said they did not find anything. They said they checked the injectors, switched the coils, and checked the plugs but it always came back to the same codes. Anyone have any suggestions to what it could be? BTW its a 2001 LS V8 with 99,635 miles

Cyl 4 would be passenger side, closest to the car. If it's missing there should be a slight shaking feeling in the car. If its doing that while IDLEING than its fairly bad. When driving it should go away because its under less stress. Either way your coil should be about dead. Im replacing my passenger side coils, plugs, and VCG this week.

As for the bank 2 lean, I have no idea.

Go to your local oreilley and borrow a scanner and clear the code. If it doesnt come back for a while its not that bad of a misfire. I got 2 weeks between CEL's and it started to really :q:q:q:q the bed.

well - it's likely not seperate issues - more like a vacuum leak causing both.

I would buy a vacuum gauge and test to see if I'm pulling 18-20hg vacuum at idle. if not - that's your problem.

I cleared the codes and they were back up within 20-30 min or less.

yea if you have a leak or some other issue it's pointless to "clear the codes" without fixing the problem.

Need to do what quickLS suggested.

I took it to the dealership today and they said it is misfiring on cylinders 1-4 now and they won't be finished all the testing until Tuesday. As I stated earlier I heard kind of a knocking sound from the front passenger side of the motor. Could that sound be the timing chain/tensioner? and Would the timing chain/tensioner cause a misfire?

My car was making a knocking sound in the same place. The noise ended up being the secondary timing chain slapping around because of a failed tensioner.

Did the dealership find this problem or did you do it yourself? Because I dropped my car off at 9am and they said I wont get it back until Tuesday and im like WTF???? But i suggested the timing chain to them.....Was your car throwing out a misfire code?

I found out through searching on the web and talking to some guys on here. My stethoscope really let me hear the metallic sound also.:D

I started having a few codes come up, a couple misfire codes on the passenger side plus that bank was showing, a too rich code and a too lean code, plus an out of range code if I remember right.

With the cam advancing and retarding because of the slack in the chain I can see where it was out of mechanical relation throwing everything off. My exhaust cam was off by it seemed over tooth or so. Lots of play in the chain.

That may or may not be your problem though.

Sounds like when the timing chains went out on mine. I tried changing the tensioner first but with a loose chain the tensioner will get torn up in about 10k miles. If you let it go too long like I did, then you get to change the timing gears in the heads too. I hate and love my LS. Oh yeah, It took me about 36 hours to tear down and put together in my garage. Might be easier if you can figure out how to drop the engine. The accessories on the side of the engine is where all the time is at.

Vacuum leak

Not sure of the setup on a V8, I've got the V6, mine did the same thing, turned out to be the vacuum line to the PCV, rotted away because of the engine heat, this is the second time to replace in 109K miles.

Got the car back from the dealership today and they couldnt find out whats wrong with it. They say it has to be internal. But i know its the timing chain because i really hear it now. But i think im going to part ways with the lincoln lol. Im going to try to get $2000 for it. Its a good deal for someone that knows how to do the repair.
