My check engine light just went off today. What a dissapointment since i bareley got my car back today from the dealership (they repainted my front bumper) and i just purchased this car two weeks ago. Today when was driving it i had forgotten i left it engaged in the select shift mode and i had the music loud at full blast (damn THX) so when i glanced at the tack it was at around 5200 rpms and my guess is that it was like that for at least 20 seconds but would that really have damaged anything? The car runs great. i get around 350 miles with a full tank. my car is an 03 v8 even though the production date states 12/02 so i guess that means i also got the crappy tranny? the only thing i dont like about the way this car drives is the way it shifts, it seems to hunt for gears too much. i bareley tap the gas and it downshifts. Is this normal? thats the reason i was using select shift so it wont shift so much. I heard that there was a reflsh that had to be done to the pre 03 models but i think mine dosent have it because i heard that when you get it reflashed they will put a sticker under the hood stating that the car was reflashed and mine dosent have it. But any ways what could have caused the check engine light to come on? Im also thinking my car could of been a lemon or something sincei didnt get a carfax before i bought it. Please help!(I knew i should of boughten the CTS!)

My car has been reflashed and there is no sticker under the hood. You may want to try and unhook your battery(the neg. bolt into the car) to reset the computer and this will also reset the shift points. The computer learns as you drive and shifts accordingly to how you drive so since you just bought it a couple of weeks ago it is still on the previous owners driving style. I would try this first, keep it unhooked about fifteen or twenty minutes.
I'm not sure about the check engine light, maybe because you did stress the engine by not shifting. If it come on again get it checked out.

You drive around at over 5000 rpm and you blame the car??? You can thank your lucky stars you weren't in a CTS doing that. This V8 can handle it just fine. I'm guessing your check engine light is because of a lean condition caused by cruising at such a high rpm. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes and go let the adaptive strategy do it's thing again. As was suggested, it might help the tranny too. If it doesn't, take it to the dealer and have them check for ECM updates. We had ours done and it made a heck of a difference in the way the tranny shifts.

alright im going to disconnect my batterry and see if if the light comes back on. thanks guys
