Cleaning out an oil pan

A while back now, I bought an oil pan from this guy and well lets just say he may not of been the smartest guy on the block.....

He sandblasted it down and when he did that he did not cover up the backside and sand got down into the pan. :mad:

So today I decided to put it in the solvent tank at work and wash it out the best that I could but I'm still afraid that there might be some in there. I wipped everything that I could get my fingers on down so, I think I got most of it.

Anyone got any other ideas?
 
I would use some gas and swish it around and dump it out, and then repeat the process maybe 5-10 times.... and then the last time use some acetone.
 
Got a good air compressor? After the solvent, blow the hell out of it for 10 minutes and afterwards go around with an inspection mirror and flash light.
 
paying particular attention to the knock out on the side.

I would try to put some oil it in first, fill that little sump up and dump it out.
The oil should grab alot of the crud, then I would wash it out numerous times with something like gasoline.

Also, when you pour the gasoline out try something like a coffee filter to see if your still getting stuff out of the pan.
 
Sand has a way of getting wedged in small tight corners and them coming out at the worst time. Especially when being blasted. I'd suggest a blast from a power washer. You may need some pressure under those hard to reach areas to dislodge that sneaky sand. Don't want that crap coming loose during the pans first heat cycle and then getting through the rest of the engine. After you wash it, refer to the previous steps; blow it out with a compressor, then rinse with a solvent and blow out again. Inspect to verify its clean and you should be fine. Good luck.
 
I've gotta clean mine too, before I install it.

I was thinking I'd use an engine degreaser, then pressure wash multiple times. The gas idea never occured to me, but heck, might as well do that too!
 
With situations like these I usually head to the local quarter car wash and use the engine/wheel cleaner that sprays through the gun, then rinse the hell out of it. If it works for cleaning up after head and especially intake manifold porting, it should work well enough on your pan.

I know I rinsed it out about 5 different times at work. I'm borderline paranoid about it. Dont really want it to mess up my engine.
 
Sounds like the general idea is to use some pressure. I'll give that a try and then take it back to work to wash it out couple more times. Anything that I cna do to not work at work :D
 
Whatever you wash it with I'd do the final rinse with either a cleaner that wil evaporate completely or with engine oil itself....
