Clicking Sounds From The Rear of my LS

I am hearing a clicking and slight grinding sound coming from the rear of my Lincoln LS. The sound is only there when I start moving. When I am stopped, I hear nothing. Inside the car I can feel a rougher ride and hear a thumping ever so often from the rear.

Any ideas?
 
Not really...it's more like a metal clicking...sounds like kinda like somenoe that has rocks in a hub cap and when the wheel turns over you can hear them.
 
Sounds like your wheel bearing is going out. I had that same issue once. So I had some body just drive my car a little in a parking lot so I can be right beside. It sounded like something was in the rotor or something. Come to find out it was the wheel bearing. That noise that you hear is the wheel is actually leaning in a little on the splash plate. NOT SAFE AT ALL! I found all of this out when I had it looked at and the mechanic explained it to me while he had it on the rack. The mechanic told me I was lucky that my wheel hadn't came off. You really want to get that fixed asap if that's the problem in your case. Your symptoms sounded a lot like mine when I had that problem. I would start there.
 
i have the same problem. i think. a faint clicking of metal that sounds like its coming from the rear.
 
i had the roaring noise last nite but have not heard it since... possible just too cold out side... it was -10 by 8 last nite then down to -25... fun stuff!!
 
I think it is my wheel bearing. If I have to have my hub replaced as well...any ideas on how much a hub costs?
 
As with most things these days, its not a simple swap of a bearing I'm afraid. The wheel bearing on my 2003 LS went out and I think the entire knuckle assembly had to be replaced. That's the way it is designed -- the bearing is a permanent piece of that part. When we were diagnosing it, I had the mechanic go with me on a drive-along and he immediately knew it was a wheel bearing just by the sound. He told me that wheel bearings are a pretty regular replacement item for the LS, and that the same bearings had been used across all the years (2000-2006). Mine was fixed under warranty, so I have no idea what it would cost out of pocket.
 
Jack up the car, and see if you can wiggle the tire. If the bearing is as bad as it sounds, you'll be able to move it a quarter or eighth of an inch by hand. if it moves in all directions, it's the bearing, if it moves only top to bottom, it's one or both ball joints, left and right only, it's the joint on the leading edge of the spindle carrier casting thingy (I don't know what they call it.)
