coil conversions

You can just give me a 'slap' for my state inspection badness! :D

In all seriousness though, (for Sid) if you are a car enthusiast that likes the air - keep it and stay on top of it. If you don't care about ride too much and just want a working, reliable car that rides ok, go coil.

Blue; As I told you last year I bought this car to leave down here,,while we go north to work all summer. I love to run all over Fla. when we're down I just don't need it to SLAM DOWN (as you guys call it) in the middle of nowhere at 1am. So I figured convert it and get it over with. Our fleet of delivery trucks up north are all chevrolets,,plus we have 2 Chevy Pickups. TWO Chevy dealers LOVE me to death,,parts parts parts "BUT" a Mark V111 say in Cocoa Bch on a trip. WOW Problems

Well Sid, as your air is currently still good, I'd just continue using it. When the time comes, either get new bags or switch to coils. Whatever you might prefer.

Typically, air ride problems are progressive, so you shouldn't be just 'caught out' one day. And heck, even if the car did slam without warning (very unlikely) You'll still be able to drive it home. (carefully)

i love how people say putting coils in one destroys it, so butchering the exhaust, putting cobra hubs and brakes on, painting them weird colors, mix matching interior colors, putting after market hid's in them, throwing crazy stereo's and tv's in them, navigation systems, putting super chargers and turbo's on them, doing mods to the inside of the transmissions, changing gears, adding nitrous, all this stuff isnt destroying our precious 40,000 dollar sleds??? i cant believe the people who cry over the other people who have put coils in their mark VIII's. if you insist on having air ride fine there is nothing wrong with that, i agree the air ride is very nice, but if someone says they want to switch to coils who are all of us to say dont do it, you are crazy or stupid or you are destroying your car, its their car. i have owned mark's with air and with coils, i even put coils in my old 93, 1.5 lowered and i'll take that over the air any day, but thats my choice, it isnt destroying the car by any means. these cars are not rolls royce phantoms, or bentley's, in the end its a low production lincoln, they are nice cars and fun to drive but they are not bars of gold.

another +1 for the coils. my 94 is on 1.5" lower springs, 18x9 saleen speedstar replicas, cobra brakes soon.
handles like a corvette, doesn't have the floaty feeling like some factory setups.
love the ride, love the stance, love the handling, and love the fact that i don't have the expensive air ride problems.

just get good springs and struts/shocks if you switch. also, don't butcher any of the air ride lines or components in case you change your mind and want to switch back.

it's just a car,however it's YOUR car!

+ again for coils. Let's say you buy the front air springs, you're good again. But eventually your compressor will take a crap on you too. There's another $150-$200. You still have height sensors to worry about as they die too, Ever replaced the front height sensor & snapped off the upper control arm stud? You also have plastic air lines that crack, solenoids that become stuck open or closed, & wiring for all of it. The newest Marks are now 11 years old which just increases the likelyhood of any or all of this combination of parts to fail one by one. So even if my coils will need to be replaced in 8 years, that's the only thing i'll have to replace to keep my car off of the ground. & to disagree further with the resale of a Mark with a coil swap, I think it's 1 bad thing that has been fixed permanantly, that I won't have to worry about EVER. I see it as a plus, peace of mind, & a good sign(Sometimes)that the car has been maintained, reguardless of the owners budget. That way I can save my cash for the blend door, or the rear neon, or window regulators, or resurrecting the power tilt, or fixing the damned headlights!

If it's any conselation for you I also believe implants destroy the female body too. Just not the same, don't feel the same, smell the same or taste the same. They are aweful!!!!!!!
And thank you for your statement. It alows me to have my opinion.:blah:

EDIT
And how often do we see that god aweful yellow mark show up. 90% of you claim that car was destroyed. By adding some paint!!!! What about that rice rocket wing we often see, 90% also claim it ruined the car. Everyone is a hipocrite. But my hipocracy only goes so far. And no, I have no clue if I spelled that right. Get off my back and enjoy my sarcasm.

Might want to put in what you think the 'best' struts are.

Now for my opinion. I had a 93 before my current 97 and the 93 had an air ride it's whole life. My 97 bags went bad 1 month after I got it. I bought new back bags and the front bags went bad. I was in a money crunch at the time so I got a pair of AirMasters (?) lowered struts all the way around *used* for 200$ shipped with '20,000' miles on them. I thought these were the best struts you could buy for the mark VIII but I could be wrong.

It turns out that while they were cheap because they were used either A. they were used much more than 20,000 miles or B. they are not the best struts in the world. They work, don't get me wrong, but they are worn out. The car, over subsequent humps in the road, if bad enough will bottom out. This had led me to being very careful going down roads that I don't know and going up and down ramps. It is a small price to pay but it's a price none the less. As far as handling and the way it feels I guess I can't say much because of the wear of the struts but even so, I remember the first day I drove it I thought they were a bit more stiff and the car turned a bit different. I'd like to get in a mark that has a good pair of struts on them to see what these things are like over humps etc. I do miss the auto. leveling feature of the air ride though. Some of my friends are not small.

Price comparison. If i remember right a new set all the way around of bags cost 800$ and the struts all the way around cost 'i think' a little more than half that.

Like I said before my struts are bad but I don't have to worry about them. In the end though If I paint my mark and decide to keep it I will put bags back on it. ( I have a brand new pair of rears sitting in the garage. )

In the end. If money isn't really an issue get the bags. But, if your bags, compressor, and relay have all gone bad maybe struts isn't such a bad idea.

my struts and shocks are monroe sensatracs for a 97 tbird. they may not be the BEST available, but they work fine for me and are what i consider reasonably priced.

you could spend a fortune on some fully adjustable, track style bad boy struts and shocks, but for a daily driver they just really aren't worth it.

I just destroyed my 95 last night.. Put in my new standard height conversion from American Air Suspension...

Boy that Destroyed car runs and rides nice... no more head aches. Sure glad I destroyed it.

Dang it my 95 still looks like a Mark VIII ... I thought that all of a sudden it was going to change to a T-Bird. It didn't.

Funny thing is the coil change didn't change the performance of the 4.6 DOCH engine that I love so much and why I have my Mark VIII's...

My thought is, the mark's interior is quite nice and it looks killer. Adding some coils isn't going to hurt the luxury - maybe lose that plush ride, but I'm not after that.

I'm getting my Tokico setup on Monday :)
