Coolant Fan Issue

Hi Guys,

I have a 2004 lincoln lse V8. The problem is that the coolant fan comes on when I have the AC on, but does not come on by itself if I am stuck in traffic unless I turn the air on. This has lead to me almost overheating. At times even when the air is on it doesnt turn, but once I manually spin the blade, it starts turning normally.

The first time I almost overheated I changed the degas bottle. It was cracked, so it seems I had two issues. Help.

I also need to replace the dccv, is this an easy job. Any recommendations on where to get the part. Do you need special tools? I am not a mechanic, but very logical with mechanics.

The fan usually doesn't fail. You most likely have air in the system due to cracked plastic components. Replace all the plastic parts, flush the system fill and bleed the air. The fan always comes on just at a low speed and a higher speed when the ac is on. If the car is running hot the fan will run at max speed.
 
It usually doesn't fail, but it does sound like his fan is failing. It's not repairable. Replace it.

Sounds like a failure of the fan motor.

The DCCV is relatively easy and pretty straight-forward. No special tools needed on the Gen II cars (which you have). Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. Alldata says 1.2 hours so I imagine a motivated, competent mechanic can do it in half that.

Yes, the 2004 V8 is the same as the 2006. The only thing to watch for is that there are two different versions of the cooling fan. Most have a single, four pin connector, but some early ones have two, two pin connectors instead. It will be easiest if you replace your fan with one with the same number of connectors as you have. If this is not practical, you can convert from one to the other, the wire colors are still the same.

Please note that it is very important to follow the coolant bleeding procedure exactly as written.
 
You should have the two connector fan. They pop up on eBay fairly regularly. Just search for an 2003 2004 Lincoln LS fan.

I have one stashed in my attic for a project that I can let go if you get in a bind.
 
I also agree to change the fan. Mine was constantly running and making that jet sound, causing my car to over heat. I just got it replaced today and the jet sound is gone. I had to get to work so did not have time for them to change the thermostat. Also, this meant the antifreeze did not bleed out completely.

I drove it home and took my friend's car to work so it could sit. It got to fully bleed but I seen it went a little past half way on the temp. Im hoping it's just a need for a new thermostat.
