I just took my 2005 LS (v6) to the dealer because it was misfiring and the check engine light came on. The dealer called me an hour later saying that when they were going to hook it up to the computer there was no diagnostic plug. Someone had cut off the diagnostic plug. I bought the car a few months ago from a local dealer and never even bothered to look at the plug. The dealer is quoting me $290 to install a new plug. Does anyone know the part number for this plug? and is it worth it to install myself instead of paying $290? Thank in advance for anyone's help.

Wow, I don't know the answer for that, but why the hell would they cut off the original plug??

Yeah I agree!

As for that plug... the price does sounds a bit high for the installation of a new plug. However, OEM plugs are known to be rather expensive (for this plug, I wouldn't be shocked at a $70-$80 retail price). And depending on how it comes and has to be installed (pig-tails or disassembled with separate pins), you could have a couple hours labor. It can add up pretty quick.

If they mean the OBDII plug that should be universal and cheap

Universal, yes... From Ford and cheap... no. Try pricing out headlight plugs or really just any OEM plugs from the manufacture; it's highway robbery

Why OEM? Can't you just go to the junkyard and cut an OBDII socket off any recent car and solder it up yourself? There's only 16 pins and not all of them are connected anyway.

+1 owlman, I thought they were all the same, just get one from a pick+pull usually they will just let you have it no charge(at least the ones by me). Solder it up yourself.

You might run into a problem with wire color, which isn't that bad as long as you can determine the location it is intended on going in the factory harness. However, some cars will have more pins than other cars (obviously all have the required number to run the basic OBD-II). Anyway... good luck!

dumb question - but - have you looked yourself?

the plug is just behind the bottom lip of the dash cover (straight down from the iginition key) - inches in from the center console.

many folks have trouble finding it....

Maybe they didn't want someone looking at the car to check the PCM codes. It is becoming pretty common for shoppers to show up with code checking devices. When I took my LS for a test drive I scanned it for codes.
