Discovered major flaw with MKS

The MKS has push button start and a smart fob that you just keep in your pocket. Great convienence but i find a huge problem with it. The glove box has no keylock because there is no "key" and the trunk button inside doesnt have the ability to lock with a key either like in the LS.

I have a CCW permit and often carry my firearm. If i decide to leave it in the car there is no place to technically "secure" it or lock it anywhere while i am away from the car. Not until i went to the range this past weekend did i even think of this issue, which i do consider to be an issue. The only solution i can think of is bolting down a small electronic gun safe in the trunk somehow.

Actually know that i think of it the sync has a valet mode which i beleive you can enter a pin # which will prevent the trunk release button from working unless you enter the pin #. I know there is a valet mode but i dont know if it just locks the navi or it also includes the trunk release. Have to do some studying up.

Update: Valet mode only locks the GPS navi screen, nothing else. Still back to bolting or having a muffler shop weld a lock box in the trunk.

If you have a Moon Roof, will it fit in the glass panel stow area?

What do you have in the way of a center console, and do you really need it? That would make a convenient place to install a safe big enough to put a pistol or two.

So far as the trunk goes, my late father in law had this doohickey in his car to prevent theft. It was some kind of encrypted key plug that would not allow the car to start unless the correct key was in, and it couldn't really be hotwired because unless the correct wires were connected using this little plug it wouldn't start. You'd have to know the correct order of wires to connect in order to get the box to allow the car to start. Instead of splicing it into the starter wire you might be able to splice it into the trunk lock wiring, so if the plug isn't in the trunk won't open. You could leave the plug in place all the time, until you have the gun in there, then you just grab the plug and go. Sorry, I don't know what the name of the thing is, so I wasn't able to check the wiring diagram before suggesting it. Perhaps someone here works with alarm systems might know?

on a side note, I'm really surprised that your military buddy runs a mag well grip on one of his AR's, I'v always found it comfortable for supporting a carbine or a SBR, but every military guy i shoot with will give you hell about them since, in the case of certian malfunctions where there is a fire out of battery, the gun is designed to blow everything out of the mag well including the entire magazine. which is not where you really want your fingers!

regardless, very nice sticks for sure, is the second one a piston gun or does it just have an adjustable gas block?

Im assuming your referring to the first camo AR with the mag well grip, i dont cant answer that. He has three and perhaps wanted one with that grip, but that isnt where you grip when shooting anyway. The second tan AR is a gas block. If i recall he said he can put a ton of rounds thru that and it'll stay clean as opposed to the piston. The scope on the tan AR was amazing.

Great thing about Florida is that you don't have to "secure" a firearm with a CCW. Theft is another issue, but driving to the range you are fine.

Exactly. As long as its not in "plain view" you can keep it anywhere. The MKS has nice big door pockets which you can tuck it in there for quick access if needed.

Even if you dont have a CCW in Florida you can drive with a firearm in your car. If im not mistaken there has to be three steps to gain access to make it legal to drive around with. So example: gun in a snapped holster, inside a zippered case, inside your glovebox = legal. Unholstered chambered gun sitting under drivers seat = metal bracelets.

too many choices! lol

if i wasn't worried too much about the price, i would be looking at a Les Baer. PSA had a great deal last week for a stainless Kimber for a hair under $800.

also been looking at maybe getting a new remmy R1 and having the work done to it. then there are those days when you find a used STI or TRP for a silly price somewhere almost locally :( too many choices!!

hell who am i kidding, a new 1911 is going to have to wait a few years. the cheap one i have now will get me by. there is still a few parts my AR needs, i have a PRP trigger kit that needs to be fitted into my XDm. but the real reason is for my next hand gun, i jut want something silly, pretty sure i'm leaning toward a DEagle, but an S&W 500 sure looks like a whole lot of fun!

I guess you fall into two catagories with guns. Collector or protector. I personally fall in the protector. I own for one reason and one reason only, take out the bad guy, when or where that might be. Have a Mossberg 500 pistol grip for the house, and a 9mm for CCW. Wanting to add a .45 for CCW. Thats where the XDS is running thru my head.

Florida is also one of a few states that has the most reciprocity with other states as far as your Florida CCW permit being honored there. Just got to make sure you know what the yocal laws are.

Exactly why I have one and I don't live in Fl. Good for seven years versus one or five years like some other states.

yeah, i kinda fall into both category's, top importance is to have something that above all else is reliable and absolutely goes bang every time. but I also enjoy going out to the range for a few hours every once and a while just to see how far away I can hit. the one thing I dont like is any gun that I can't shoot, if it looses too much value by shooting it, it aint for me!

well you surely cant go wrong with any springer, thats for sure.

I also have a Mossberg 500 for home protection. It just sits and collects dust. The barrel is a little less than legal.

Finally a non mks thread!

AR's are ok. Hard for me to get excited about them after shooting them for years.

I just don't like the caliber, i would prefer if the military fielded a 7.62 instead of a 5.56 for that weapon. I have an XD .40 service, and it kicks harder than any of the m4's ive ever shot.

Not saying that's a bad thing, but the round just doesn't have the power. And the star chamber on most gets full of crud really damn quick. There may be other opinions on here but in my eyes that round is damn near useless today when the enemy has a much larger round they use against us.

Ive heard that its a bad idea to get an out of state CCW/CHL. Here in Texas, you have to go to a range and take a 10 hour class and pay $150 to hold a state CHL but the Florida license is only 4 hour class and no range. And for that reason it may not hold up in court, as the judge will wonder why you took the easy route and didn't get the proper CHL.

Now it wouldn't be a bad idea to get both, but i would still recommend you get the home state license first.

I'm military so range time and classes is waivered for active duty, retired active duty etc. For civilians with no prior firearm experience yes they will have to take a firearm class but not for active duty military. I just show prove of M16 trainging and whatever else I've shot and that's it. I'm a resident of MS, live in VA. I've had a VA CCW permit before but went with FL when it expired because when I travel going o home, it covered more states. Especially the ones I drive through. In states that honor other CCW permits or have a reciprocal agreement there is that one area where if you get a permit from another state which some states consider a non resident permit because you are not a resident of that state, it might not be vaild in your home state or other states. That's what you have to watch out for when obtaining CCW permits outisde your home state versus getting one for your home state. I plan on getting one for MS just to have for when I go home from time to time because CCW laws change quite often and they don't send nothing advising people of it but that are a few websites that I keep in my browser that do a good job of keeping up with the changes in state CCW laws. Peple get other states CCW for various reasons especially if they do a lot of traveling by car in a certain area. But the thing to remember is what I said earlier about the non resident agreement with your home state which can be terminated at any given time.

Not true. In Florida you DO have to take a range proficiency test after the class to get your certificate.

Oh....and GO MKS!!!!

For Iowa you have to have a certificate saying you took a course....meaning being trained on the proper handleing, ect. ect. You do not have to have any range time. In fact you can take the course online.......don't even need to do it with other people. The County Sheriff that you reside in has the ultimate say in yes or no to a license or CCW.

I haven't done it yet for Texas but i beleive we have to show basic weapons skills and safe handling of a weapon.

Obviously all states are different. I can say that in Florida you take the course and then prove proficiency with a range/shooting test. Dont remember exact requirements, was awhile ago, but you had so many shots and had to hit within a specified area on target. I remember a woman who couldnt even hit the target and i think it was only at like 5 yards or something crazy easy. Bottom line if you can even hit a paper target at 5 yards you dont deserve a permit.

i know that i wouldn't want to carry all that extra weight around for that heavy ass ammo. your already carrying around enough weight in gear, a couple hundred rounds of any .30 cal would just be too much on top of it. the ballistics of 556 are pretty damn good, there is a reason it is used, two of which are that at 3000 fps, it is terminal at 500-600 yards and you can carry four times the amount of ammo.

if you need longer than that, I would be looking else where than 7.62/.308.

if you really want bigger, you should try 300BLK. really fun when you throw some subsonics through a suppressor, gotta love when you dont need to wear any hearing protection!

I love how this thread started as a safety issue and has turned into a ballistics discussion. Its all good though :) I fully support the owning of a firearm and believe every (responsible) american should own one.

One interesting thing i'd like to point out. I am sure that most have heard of the Zimmerman/Martin case here in Orlando. Just so happens that the Zimmerman guy owned and used the same 9mm that i have. So aside from the "tragedy" aspect of the case its nice to know the firearm i own is effective with a one shot kill. Some kinda diss the 9mm round but the reality is a 147gr JHP 9mm round will have more penetration than a .357 or .40 round and cause just as much damage. I'd still like to add a compact .45 cal though. Which brings up another discussion point, that of a single stack compact. Look, if i cant kill the bad guy with 6 rounds then i dont need to be pointing a gun in the first place. Im confidant the first round fired would do its job, the remaining 5 rounds would be squeezed off just for good measure :gr_devil:

Suggest you check out the COR-BON 115gr +P round. One reason I like the Ruger 9MM is they are all capable of handling +P and +P+ rounds.

And they aren't nose heavy like a FWD car :p;):p;)

I love hearing about how a 9mm can't stop someone in their tracks....I need something bigger.....blah blah blah......I could kill someone with a pencil if needed.

hey, once you start showing pictures of assault rifles, all bets of staying on topic are off! :D

on second thought, it doesn't matter what the topic is, sooner or later this train is getting derailed!
