Dismal fuel economy - 19 mpg average on freeway

I just drove 180 miles at 85 mph and averaged 21.9 mpg and the road is not flat by any means. I also had a first gen mark in front of me for a while and let's just say we much better than 85 for a while

21.9?!? I wish.... around town right now its between 17.4 and 17.5. I did some highway a last week and it never got over 17.9.

its an average. reset it before you hit the highway next time.

lol...Yeah.. Hell I went on my trip last month and got mid 20's. My average is still at 20.xx(dropping slowly) after a month of city driving. Gotta reset that Andy.

I think you should check it for codes if your lucky you'll have some, could definatly be a coil heat can effect electronics, a few years ago my interior lights would not go out when the doors were shut in the morning and then when I would leave school in the afternoon then would be fine, I believe it was becuase in was alot cooler in the morning then in the afternoon.

you could just go somewhere and have them do a coil test with a scan tool.

Those are 2 very good ideas. I'll give them a try. I believe most parts houses can do a coil test if you remove them.

Meanwhile, I bought a set of Coil On Plug boots since they're probably due for replacement.

it is possible that slime leaked from your suspension parts and got into you wheel bearings, otherwise i would suggest fuel filter with a new batch of gas from a good gas station

Yea, I did today when I got on the highway and with the cruise set at 80 it stayed around mid to high 23s.

I think the best I ever got was 26. Cruise was set at 80 all the way through Mississippi. Now I get a whopping 21 on a good day, Dang Blower.

I get..........
18-19 mpg 100% around town driving (surface streets, lots of lights, sitting in rush hour traffic)
21-22 mpg mixed town and interstate (34 miles round trip to work, interstate to work, surface streets through town coming home)
30-32 mpg 100% interstate doin 70-75 mph (round trip from SLC, Ut to south eastern Idaho and/or southwest Wyoming and back home to mormonville)

I get better milage with the my Mark than my Taurus ever got, and have more than twice the power and comfort...........and the Mark has a bit of style the Taurus could never have :)
