Display on odometer not working?

Ok I have an 01 LS. I have had it for 3 years and in all that time I have never once seen it display anything on the bottom right screen of the gauge cluster. The bottom left side works fine showing mileage and trips but not once has the right side worked. Now I am under the impression that the right side should be displaying things like "door ajar, trunk ajar, low fuel, etc but it doesn't do any of that. What should I look into to get this working? Will a new gauge cluster taken from another LS work? Will my mileage transfer over since it's digital?

Now when I open my car door while it's on the car does make the loud "chime" and I assume at that moment is when it would say "door ajar" on there but nothing. I have always wondered why the car randomly "chimed" at times, if my display worked I would truly know what it was for everytime.

Assuming that you have a V8, then yes it should be working. (If you have a V6, then someone swapped in a V8 cluster.)
What you are talking about is called the "message center." If you swap clusters, the mileage will not transfer. You'll get whatever mileage the used cluster has in it. A dealer can transfer the mileage, but I don't know if they can do this for used clusters, or only new ones. In any event, if you swap the cluster, your car won't start again until a dealer (or someone with a good scan tool) "marries" the replacement cluster to your car. Note that you will need at least two keys to do this.

Ahhhh ok. Well based on the unaligned trim pieces around the cluster, I assume someone did swap it out at some point. And must have done it through the dealership because the mileage seems to be correct. Well that's unfortunate. Sounds expensive.

The message center won't work on the V6. The correct cluster for the V6 has some warning lights (like door ajar and such) in that area of the cluster.

Correct. NO V6 (nor the T-Bird for that matter) got the message center. One of my pet-peeves about the LS...... For the money ALL LSes should have had it.
