do mark VIII's have a traction control button?

I know that some mark's have traction control, but is it a button where u can turn on and off, if so, where is it located?

Yep... On the Gen-1 they had it next to defrost... The best thing was the car operated w/out it until you pressed it.

In the Gen-2's its always on and to turn it off, you must go through the Vehicle Settings on the dash console... PITA... I know some guys who, without thought, immediately after turning over, reach for the dash... Right Brent!! LOL
 
wasnt TC an option on the 93 94's? if so he probabily doesnt have the option
 
if equiipped, the traction control on/off switch is located in front of the shifter -

Sorry bud, that's wrong.

The Gen 1 (93-96) models had the OPTION of traction control. It was a popularly equipped option however. The default for the traction control is ON. When the button(located next to the rear defrost button) is depressed with the traction control ON, a circuit to ground is completed which signals the traction control to be turned OFF and the button is illuminated when OFF signifying the traction control has been switched OFF. Likewise, when the button is depressed with the traction control OFF, a circuit to ground is completed which signals the traction control to be turned ON and the button illumination is turned OFF signifying the traction control has been switched ON. If the traction control is switched OFF and the ignition key is turned to OFF, the next time the vehicle is started and the ignition switch is ON, the traction control will default to ON.

As Jamler said, I unconciously shut off the T/C after turning the engine over. In fact, I am looking for the buttons in other cars when I get in them after cranking the ignion :steering

I wondered about that Gen1 thing, I can't recall any cars that, stock, came as opt-in on the T/C. Could Jamler's Gen1 been modified by a previous owner?
 
Both my '93's had T/C. JP is right again. Got to turn it off, just like the 2nd Gen. I too reach for the (Vehicle Settings / Traction On-Off / Hit the reset button)everytime I enter the car.

what's the advantages of driving with it off? I know the advantages of having it on. Does it help mpg or is it a power thing?
 
Interesting JP... Its been since '00, since I owned my Gen-1... I had thought is was off until engaged, guess my party days are catchin up!... But I do know it was just a toggle button on the Gen-1's.. Didn't have to go through the dash console to disengage.
 
What JP said....it was an option, and it is located (IF so equipped) to the right of the rear defroster switch on the Gen 1's. All of the VIII's I have owned had it, but I have seen 3 of them that did not have it, and MAN....those ones can do the NASTIEST burnouts.....even as good as yours Geno....WITHOUT mods. My brother (who no longer owns one because of a tranny shop that did not know their a$$es from a hole in the ground with the VIII tranny) did not have a T/C switch, and he did some of the SICest burnouts I have seen....considering his car was BONE stock performance wise. He did a burnout at Carlisle a few years ago thru the WHOLE parking lot at the hotel we were staying at, and prolly could have gone farther if it were not for the fact that the parking lot stopped. That thing was SIC.....I have never seen a burnout (non-modded) in a VIII ever.
 
Could we have some owner opinions of how a mark viii performs in snow with TC compared to without or other rwd cars without tc

Excellent question. Most Gen 1 Mark VIII owners simply never switch it off.

But I make this challenge... from a dead stop, with the TC on and the OD on - floor it. Now repeat, but this time turn off the TC and turn off the OD - floor it. I know in my '93, it is a night and day difference, always has been, even when 'stock'. Somewhere, I have Tazzo readings that show the power difference. :steering

EDIT: As far as the difference in the snow, I couldn't tell you comparatively. Even as a daily driver it rarely ventured out in bad weather, But I can tell you the TC is supposed to limit the spinning by applying the brakes to the spinning wheel using the ABS module, effectively transferring torque to the other wheel. It is an open differential and even a 4WD vehicle with an open diff in 2WD is hopeless compared to the same with a traction lock differential.

T/C Sucks just like ABS if you Love driving you know what Im talking about.
 
on my Vic I disabled the abs by pulling the relay. Can i do that on the mark or is it tied in with other systems? will the tc go insane if I pull it?
 
Well you guys have answered my question about having traction control now I know my mark 8 doesnt have it
 
After doing the JMod to my 97 TC is nearly always engaged every take off and the 1-2 shift. I can turn it off in 3 seconds flat, but am working on a module that will shut it off. I have many other things going like I haven't disabled the air ride message, the TFT is bad and I get random message to check transmission, and oil level monitor is out of whack, so when I start it up, there might be 1 message to clear, or 2, or 3, or 4, or none, so to disable TC and set it to show economy I have all sorts of possible key presses, and still it takes 3 seconds!

I like the GenII version of TC better than GenI (all speed versus low speed only) but I have that I can't disable it permanently, or even with a tune. I rarely need it (I think we got 7 inches of rain in 2013).
 
9 years is an impressive bump, should have waited 1 more to make it a decade though.
