Does your car "PING" on 87 Octane

Why would anyone run 87 octane in their mark VIII when the dash says prememium fuel recomended as well as the manual for the car. The engine is designed for high octane fuel.

my dad drove his 1993 from PA to Florida to california and back last fall.

he said when he was in higher elevations in the rockies he came to gas stations that only had 85 yes 85 octane,he said the car ran fine, but has anyone else ever come across this?

by the way Lincoln does NOT say premium ONLY,they say for best performance.

Uhh, i dont beleive its possible to damage or harm the bearings by using 87... Lack of oil would though. My car NEVER pings when I use 87.

I run 87 octane in my 98 LSC, and yes, it detonates. Thing is, the car detonates on 91 octane too. I have a video I could show all of you guys if someone will host it - it's 22 megs.

I added two gallons of 109 octane unleaded on the dyno to take care of the problem, but I'll be damned if I'm going to spend that kind of coin every fill-up.

Solution: I drive the Lincoln like an old man, never floor it, and leave the hot-rodding to my big-inch mustang.

Paul.

PS - Phoenix has some of the sh!ttiest gas in the country.

I'm guessing carbon buildup on the pistons causing a compression increase? Maybe try some seafoam. My car will run hard on 91 octane now that it is cleaned out.

I am a mechanic and have been working on ford for 20 years now, and no way in hell can 87 octane ruin an injector that is total BS, its almost funny. If that were true than 99 percent off all cars that everyone runs 87 would be junk now. But Every one should stay away from BP gas or Amoco gas there ratings of octane are much lower that others. I have many customer that insist on only using it but they tell me it pings if they don't use premium, And that is in cars that only require 87(non mark8's) just regular cars taurus's trucks whatever, I had a 4cyl mustang and in a pinch I almost ran out and had to get amoco man did it ping till I got some shell 87 shell in it. Amoco gas also has additives that builds up on the plugs, If I take the plugs out of a car that have a redish tint to them I know they have been buring amoco.
