Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm away from the car and I need to find out the oil capacity for the V8:rolleyes: , can someone help me out? I'm ordering some Amsoil online and need to figure out how much to order.

Thanks.

3.0 v6: 7 quarts
3.9 v8: 6 quarts

What my '02 ls8 manual says.

Thanks, it's strange that the V6 holds more.

Anyone using Wix oil filters on your cars?

No. I suggest only using Motorcraft.

Yeah, I probably will, the only reason I asked was because I was on the Amsoil website ordering my stuff and they don't make an Amsoil oil filter, but they recommended Wix. Well, when I went to look up the Wix filters, there were two different product numbers, it said one was prior to 7/02 and one was for after 7/02, kind of strange, I thought.

Like I said, I either use Mobile 1, or Castrol Syntec 5-30, with a Mobile 1 oil filter. I have never had any problems, and being that my v6 has 96k miles on it, I change it every 2000-2500. When I do change it, its in my driveway, I let all the oil completly drain, then flush a few quarts through to make sure its clean. After it is done draining, I clean the area around my oil filter, and lube the gasket of the oil filter with clean oil, screw it on tight, put my drain plug in, fill the car with 6 quarts of oil, start it up, check under car for leaks, take car off ramps, let sit fo a minute, check the oil level. My oil is never really dirty, it will get a little brownish tint in it but thats all. I changed it a few days ago because on Friday I went to vermont, I averages about 27mpg for my 300 mile trip there.

I use Wix on my 2004 LSV8. I prefer Purolator but haven't found any in my local shops. I have used Fram.

I compared the Wix and Fram and weighed them on our laboratory scale. The Wix is slightly shorter but significantly heavier. I would guess the wix has a more rugged construction and maybe more filter material. Looking thru the opening, the Wix does appear more rugged with better filtering.

I buy Wix from Rock Auto. If you buy 4 or 5 the cost of shipping per unit is much less and the overall cost is less than buying filter at the local shops. I think my cost is about $11 per filter. The shops list filters between $12(Fram) and upto $22, yeow.

I have used Fram, Purolator, and even Wix since the early 70s and never had a failure with any of them so I cannot complain. I used to only buy Wix way back in the early 70s because they were cheap and what Western Auto shops sold.

I have read good things on the Wix and Purolator. Not so good on Fram.

I use Mobile 1 5W30 syn. It has significantly less cold start noice than the recommended 5W20, at least here in SoCal.

Just my experience,

You are correct. I have seen the Fram and Wix cut open and the WIX does have more filtering material.

I used to work at a NAPA parts store - their "gold" filters are made by Wix. I saw the filter rep take a Napa filter off the shelf and proceed to cut it open along with a Fram and a Motorcraft. The Fram was definitely the cheapest looking with the least amount of filter material inside. I would have to say the Motorcraft was next best consturcted and the Wix being the best looking internally. The Fram actually had carboard ends on the filter element!!

I would say you can't go wrong buying the Wix filters - that's all I'll put on my cars....

I have motorcraft oil and filters at my local Walmarts. Good prices too.

I worked at NAPA too and that is the same thing our rep did only he did not do a motocraft only the FRAM.

my 2000 v6 takes 6 qts of 5-30.

off topic, what is the lincoln ls "mtx" stand for?

Actually, 6.7 qts for the V6.

MTX is kinda shorthand for manual transmission.

nope, you are wrong on that. i am 100% positive that my car takes 6 qts. in my owners manual, it says that the v6 and v8 both take 6.0 of 5-30

i always put 6.0 qts in my car and it reads perfect on the dipstick

and my car is a manual tranny, why dosnt my car come with those badges. and where could i buy them.

Manual transmission only available on early v6 ls's

I wish mine had been one.

Mine takes 6.5 to read full after a change.
I use wix filters after I had a Fram filter explode on my pathfinder.
I use mobil1 in all my vehicles and change it at approx 3500 miles.
Only the pathfinder makes the oil dark brown and opaque in those miles. I think that is because the path uses a really small filter (the used one will fit in a standard size campbells soup can.

not to hijack this but has anyone added a remote filter to the LS. I know that is not we need to since it is a good size and has better than fair acess, but I was wondering.

do u know what fram filter it was.

nope, but I think it was comparable to a NAPA 1515 gold (the one that most FORDs used to use)

My friend's sister is a Chemical Engineer for Mobil on the team that did the reformulation of the "new" Mobil 1 oil line and she told me that if you're changing your oil under 6.5k then there's no point in spending the extra money on Mobil 1 filters. She said to buy whatever is on sale since I'm doing my oil changes between 2.5-3k.

You can take what she said with a grain of salt if you like, but I trust someone that actually designed the oil.

Amsoil... such a waste of money.

It is if you don't follow the drain intervals. But, with the new EaO filters and the 0W-30 Series 2000 oil, you can now change oil and filter at one year intervals, or 25,000 miles. So, I pay $5.95 a quart for oil and about $12 for a filter, for a total of $47 and that's it until next year at this time. For "wasting" that money, all I get is a product that is so far superior to anything else on the market, it's not even funny. Do some research and know what you are talking about before you start making statements that don't make sense.

Mobil 1 is a quality oil, but in lab tests, it's not even in the same ballpark as Amsoil, not even close.

My 2004 v6 takes 6.9 qts every time... just like it says in the OM. A bit excessive but it does help the engine run cooler.

FYI.. I use motorcraft 5W20 every 4k (split the difference, OM says every 5k and motorcrft says 3k).

I wish I had a garage so I could be doing this stuff myself, save some money and know it is done right... and not have to find time in between work hours to take it in.

Where are these Lab tests? Were they done by an independent firm, or was it done inhouse by amsoil?

I have done my research. I would LOVE to see a UOA after you run that oil for 25000 miles in you car. Hell, I'll pay for the UOA, but you have to prove it's been in there for 25K miles, not 3-4-5000.

No full flow filter should go 15/25k miles, especially comparing the ease to change versus the risk. What do you suppose all the unfiltered particles do in your motor for those 25K miles?

Why does amsoil sell an oil bypass kit if the filter is so good, especially for 25K miles? What happens if say, you have a bad set of rings, and you get that oil dilluted after 10K miles because of gasoline seeping past the rings? Will Amsoil still protect the motor in its dilluted state to 25K miles?

If its oil is so superior, and if their formula is so good, why don't they license it to other oil companies? They'd make a killing off the royalties.

MTX = Manual TransaXle. Technically, the LS has a transmission, not a transaxle, but it's become a slang shorthand for manual transmission.

The oil capacity of the engine depends on the year; the '03-'06 LSes take more oil than the pre-'03s. This is supposedly because of the VVT, but I think it's because Lincoln added an oil cooler in '03...

FWIW, my '04 and '06 LSes both had/have crankcase capacities of 6.5 qts.
